Todd Helton, Wilin Rosario and Josh Rutledge all homered off San Diego starter Freddy Garcia as the Colorado Rockies beat the Padres 10-4 on Saturday night.
A non-roster invitee to camp, the 36-year-old Garcia allowed seven runs - three earned - in five innings. His spring ERA dropped to 8.71, but the outing likely did little to help him gain ground on Tyson Ross in the competition for the final spot in the Padres' rotation.
Garcia said he will not accept a minor league assignment.
Six home runs were hit in the first five innings and seven in the game as hitters took advantage of a brisk wind blowing straight out at Salt River Fields.
Gustavo Molina added a three-run shot for Colorado.
For the second straight day, a Rockies starter was scratched due to injury. Jorge De La Rosa did not pitch Saturday because of tightness in his left forearm. De La Rosa is expected to throw in a minor league game Sunday.
Jhoulys Chacin, the team's opening-day starter, was scratched Friday due to back spasms. He pitched two innings against San Diego and allowed two hits, solo home runs to Kyle Banks and Cody Ransom.
Nick Hundley added his third homer of the spring for the Padres. He has 10 RBIs in 16 games.

Padres top prospects lists are everywhere. In an effort to change things up, we will not have our traditional top prospects list this year, instead we are going to have a cumulative top ten list. Jon Garland could provide some stability to the Rockies lineup.Colorado Rockies fans went from disgruntled to flat out angry when the club did nothing to improve a pitching staff that was laughable in 2012.Instead of upgrading in the offseason, the Rockies insisted that Jhoulys Chacin, Jorge De La Rosa and Juan Nicasio being healthy would change the fortunes of the embarrassing pitching...
Austin Hedges is considered the third-best catching prospect in baseball behind the Mariners’ Mike Zunino and the Mets’ Travis D’Arnaud. Regarded as a fantastic defender, he surprised with the bat as a 19-year old in the Midwest League last season. With offensive numbers 19 percent above league average, Hedges effectively shed the draft label of defensive specialist. The top...

Good news as we head into the final week of spring training is that Yonder Alonso is showing his power stroke. He hit another home run in yesterday’s game as the Padres beat the Brewers. This now makes five home runs for him in the past nine games he has played in. Hopefully that will carry over into the start of the season, especially when the Padres head to Colorado after the...
The Padres were back in action last night under the Peoria lights against the Mariners. Tyson Ross had another outstanding game as he looks to take over the number five spot in the rotation. Coming into last night’s game he was riding an 11 1/3 scoreless inning streak. That streak came to end in the fifth inning via a Kelly Shoppach home run. It proved to be the only run that Ross...
Colorado Rockies left-hander Jorge De La Rosa missed his scheduled start against the San Diego Padres on Saturday night because of a tight left forearm.
Jeff Manship started in place of De La Rosa, who is Colorado's highest-paid player at $11 million for the 2013 season. De La Rosa may be able to pitch as soon as Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers in Maryvale.
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) Yonder Alonso hit his fifth home run in his last nine games, helping the San Diego Padres defeat a Milwaukee Brewers' split squad 6-4 Sunday.
Alonso was 2 for 4 and drove in three runs, raising his spring training total to 12 RBIs to go along with a .236 average (13 for 55).
Brewers starter Wily Peralta allowed six runs and 10 hits in 5-13 innings. San Diego...
Several of the top prospects came into camp with noticeable improvement in their physiques and Austin Hedges stood out in particular. Hedges looked like he put on an easy ten pounds of pure muscle which has only added to his athleticsm.
