The rumored trade that was the most exciting happening of the offseason for the Atlanta Braves was finally put down on Saturday night. The Colorado Rockies acquired Marco Scutaro from the Boston Red Sox for a player who isn’t going to be the next Roy Halladay. At best, the Red Sox dumped the salary of Scutaro to fill another hole on their team, with the addition of Cody Ross. The Rockies will shift Scutaro to second base and probably put him in the 2 hole in their lineup.
This is officially a deal solidifying the fact that the Rockies and Braves will NOT be swapping Martin Prado. The Rockies traded Seth Smith a couple weeks ago to the Oakland A’s, which was the first signal that the deal would not happen. The acquisition of Scutaro is definitively a sign that Prado will not be playing in Colorado this upcoming year.
The rumored trade was supposedly Prado for Smith and at a minimum a center field prospect, though there were other reports that the Braves were asking f...

The Colorado Rockies acquire Marco Scutaro from the Red Sox
The Rockies have acquired 36-year old righty swinging 2B/SS Marco Scutaro from the Red Sox for 26-year old righty starter/reliever Clayton Mortensen. Scutaro played in 113 games for the Red Sox last year and he was 118 of 395 (.299 avg, .781 OPS) with 59 runs scored, 7 homers, 54 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. He has now played in 1,103 games in his first 10 years in the majors and he...
Scutaro A Perfect Fit For Rockies
The Rockies have had a confusing offseason, but there should be no confusion on their latest move, which was to acquire infielder Marco Scutaro from the Red Sox. The move, a salary dump for the Red Sox, is a clear win for Colorado.
Any devoted Rockies follower will tell you that the Rox have had their fair share of turnover at the keystone. The elder Eric Young was a mainstay for...
Marco Scutaro traded to Colorado Rockies
Yesterday, the Boston Red Sox traded Marco Scutaro to the Colorado Rockies for Clayton Mortensen. If you haven’t heard of Mortensen, don’t feel bad. He likely won’t be a part of the Red Sox plans this year anyway. For many in the industry this was a curious move for the Red Sox, but the deal will make a lot more sense when we find out what they are doing to follow...
Must Be New Math
One thing I find a little puzzling is talk that trading Marco Scutaro opened up room on the Red Sox payroll. Clearly it did, but not that much. Baseball Reference says Scutaro made $5.5 million in 2011 -- nothing to sneeze at, but not a bank-breaker by baseball standards.By comparison, Bobby Jenks, who appeared in 19 games, made $6 million in 2011.People speculating on this windfall...
The BP First Take: Monday, January 23 by Daniel Rathman
Apart from legitimate aces, quality shortstops that contribute on both sides of the ball might be the hardest commodity to come by. The Red Sox had one in Marco Scutaro, a solid defender who had a triple slash of .299/.358/.423 last season, but they traded him to the Rockies for a pitcher with a career FIP of 5.57.
General manager Ben Cherington had his reasons. The $6 million...
Jackson may be Red Sox’ target
When the Red Sox traded shortstop Marco Scutaro to the Rockies last week, the expectation was that they would use the money saved to improve their thin rotation.
Red Sox Should Use Newfound Financial Flexibility to Pursue Player Like Cody Ross for Needed Outfield Depth
The Red Sox are positioned for another major acquisition. By trading shortstop Marco Scutaro to Colorado, the Red Sox shed $6 million off the books, a move that may make once again make them buyers in the free-agent market. With the financial flexibility, it's plausible that general manager Ben Cherington will increase his pursuit of pitcher Roy Oswalt. The veteran is reportedly...
Report: Red Sox Make Offer to Roy Oswalt, Unsure of Pitcher's Interest Level
There were reports following the Marco Scutaro trade that the Red Sox would make an aggressive push for free-agent starter Roy Oswalt. They may be in the process of doing just that. The Sox have made Oswalt an offer, according to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, but it's reportedly unclear whether he's interested in joining the team. Heyman reports that Oswalt has already rejected...
