The hottest team in baseball is making life even sunnier in southern California. And all those wins are keeping alive faint playoff hopes. The San Diego Padres look to continue their push toward a wild-card spot as they host the Colorado Rockies to start a three-game series on Friday. The Padres (69-75) have won four in a row and seven of eight, playing some of their best baseball just in time to make a late playoff push. While they are still under .500, they are within striking distance of the Cardinals and Dodgers – who are playing each other this weekend – for the second NL wild-card spot. "It's a long season and you don't know what's going to happen," Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal said. "Right now we're 61/2 games back in the wild card. Baseball is a crazy sport." San Diego has been the NL's best team over the last month, going 17-5 since August 19. The Padres beat St. Louis 3-2 on Wednesday to complete their first three-game sweep of the Cardinals since August 1995. "I take it personally as a compliment to our players that we're able to do that," said San Diego manager Bud Black, whose team has won 21 of its last 27 at home. San Diego has only 18 games remaining to make its move, and the next 15 will be against division opponents before finishing with a three-game set against Milwaukee. Logan Forsythe has been one of those leading the charge. He had a solo home run on Wednesday, and is hitting .359 with 11 runs and 11 RBIs over his last 18 games. Andrew Cashner (3-3, 3.46 ERA) makes his second start since returning from the disabled list with a strained muscle. He gave up two runs and four hits in five innings last Friday against the Diamondbacks. The right-hander made two relief appearances against the Rockies earlier in the year, but this will be his first career start against Colorado. The Rockies (57-85) are just trying to avoid finishing with the worst record in franchise history after a brutal streak to close out the season. Colorado has lost eight of 10 and needs to play .500 ball the rest of the way to avoid a franchise-worst season. The Rockies went 67-95 in their inaugural 1993 season and also in 2005. The lone bright spot for Colorado has been rookie Wilin Rosario, who homered in an 8-3 loss to San Francisco on Wednesday. His next one will tie Todd Helton's for the franchise rookie record of 25 set in 1998. "Compile me a list of guys who catch who is sitting on the potential for 30-plus and 100-plus because that's what this kid's offensive ceiling is capable of," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said. Tyler Chatwood (4-4, 5.32 ERA) starts for the Rockies on Friday. He's made two relief appearances against San Diego this season, giving up seven hits and three earned runs in two innings pitched. The Padres are 8-7 against the Rockies this season.

Padres Surge into the Wild Card Race

Don’t look now, but the Padres are now part of the conversation. After sweeping the Cardinals at home the Friars find themselves only 6.5 games out of a post-season birth. For weeks I followed, but the realist in me wouldn’t allow me to think it could happen. In all honesty, I still think it’s a long shot. The Padres only have 18 games remaining. With seven teams (Cardinals...

The fans come to the games whether the Rockies are 15 games...

Friars Remain On Fire With Sweep Of World Champs.

The Padres dominance of the National League continued at Petco Park this week when they swept the defending League and World Series champion Cardinals. Logan Forsythe was outstanding over the series, getting five hits, a homer and four runs batted in, raising his average five points to .289. The Padres are now 6.5 games out of the final Wild Card spot with 18 games left on the schedule...

Chase Headley: Exceeder of Dreams

I don’t intend to mean-spiritedly pick on the fine folks over at Baseball Prospectus, but in this instance I can’t not make a little fun. A couple excerpts from paragraphs found on Chase Headley‘s player page: I don’t think Headley is going to have more than .150 Isolated Power. Partially due to Petco, partially because he’s not that kind of hitter. (5/5/2010) That was...

Padres Security Guard Ruins SportsCenter Top 10 Moment For Ball Girl

This isn’t the first time we’ve featured one of the San Diego Padres ball girls here on BC. A few weeks back, Padres ball girl Catalina made an insane catch. We’ve come to expect greatness from the Padres ball girls so this video is a real bummer. It’s a different ball girl, but she seems primed and ready to make a great catch. Enter cowardly security guard. This guy is...

Daily Friar 9.13.12

The Padres are on the verge of something special. All the articles below will point out that fact, but the Padres are definitely doing something that will be talked about a lot for the next couple weeks. There are only 18 games left in the season, 15 of those against the division. The way they are playing right now we can definitely win every series here on out and reach the .500...

Daily Friar 9.12.12

The past couple of games Chase Headley has been fairly quiet at the plate. He has been getting on base in some capacity, but he is leaving it up to the other guys on the team to do the damage and drive the runs in. That is exactly what Logan Forsythe has been doing for this team in the past couple games. He is getting men on base and driving them in to get the Padres the win any...

Rockies show why they are in the basement

Denver, CO. The Colorado Rockies showed why they are in the NL West basement during their last series against the division leading San Francisco Giants. Poor pitching was once again the demise of the Rockies, not only last night, but in the series. Jeff Francis was lit up for 5 earned runs in the first inning and remains an enigma for the Rockies going forward. Francis pitched very...

Announcer Coleman to be honored with statue

The Padres are honoring a San Diego treasure Saturday night with the unveiling of a statue of Jerry Coleman at Petco Park. The only major league player to see combat in two wars, Coleman joins Hall of Fame outfielder Tony Gwynn as the second person represented by a statue at the Padres downtown home. A day after the Hall of Fame announcer's 88th birthday, the Padres celebrated...

Daily Friar 9.14.12

After an off day yesterday, the Padres are set to commence a 3 game series with the Colorado Rockies at San Diego. Following the Cardinals 2-1 victory over the Dodgers last night, the Padres are an even 7 games back in the wild card race, so if any miraculous, late season comeback is on the horizon for San Diego they must at least win this series against Colorado. The matchup tonight...

Daily Farm Round-Up: 9-12-12

In Game 1 of the Midwest League finals, The TinCaps fall in extras to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Joe Ross made his return to Fort Wayne after going through rehab in Eugene, and performed admirably well as he struck out 5 and only allowed 2 hits over 5 innings. The TinCap bullpen that has been so rock solid in the playoffs finally faltered tonight as Luis De La Cruz walked 3 over...
