Alex Rodriguez's esteemed career took another step towards history on Tuesday night, as he hit his 23rd career grand slam against the Braves, tying him with Hall of Famer and Yankee legend Lou Gehrig for the most all-time. Rodriguez's slam came in the eighth inning of the game against Atlanta, and tied the game at four. Jonny Venters was the lucky man to give up the slam, A-Rod's tenth homer of the season and 639th of his career.

A-Rod won't be 37 until July, and has a pretty good chance at hitting another slam over the course of his career to overtake Gehrig for the top mark all-time. He's also now just 123 homers behind Barry Bonds for the all-time record, and 21 away from tying Willie Mays for fourth all-time. The slam also tied Rodriguez with Jimmie Foxx in eighth place on the all-time RBI chart with 1922. Rodriguez will likely finish the season in sixth (ahead of Stan Musial), and is primed to pass Gehrig and Bonds next year.

Back to the grand slams for a minute. Among active players, Manny Ramirez is second behind Rodriguez with 21 career slams, and Carlos Lee is third with 16. The only other players with ten or more are Jason Giambi, Albert Pujols, Adam Dunn, and Carlos Beltran.

The grand slam is a largely circumstantial event, but it's still pretty cool to see a player equal a record that has stood for over 70 years, and it's another testament to just how outstanding Rodriguez has been over his career, to the point where his career has almost been underrated since he joined the Yankees for the 2004 season.
