Yes, the season technically started off in Tokyo on Wednesday, March 28th. However, from this game forward, it is officially baseball season.  This marquee match-up offers some very intriguing storylines, and should set the tone for a tremendous season to come.

To begin with, Miami enters the season with a lot of changes; from the name switch to Miami Marlins, the new logo, brand new fancy ballpark, the signings of controversial manager Ozzie Guillen, an All-Star shortstop Jose Reyes, and a cast of new players to add to an already solid roster.  The Marlins will be an interesting team to keep an eye on to say the least.  On the other hand, the St. Louis Cardinals also begin the season with a very different look; no Albert Pujols, no Tony LaRussa and their ace pitcher, Chris Carpenter, will likely be on the disabled list for the first couple months of the season.  Even after all that, I still see the Cardinals as a very legit contender.  Now here is a deeper look into each team and some handicapping advice and picks for the game. Enjoy!

Berkman pulls prank on Wainwright

The St. Louis Cardinals and first baseman Lance Berkman pulled off an impressive April Fools' Day prank on starter Adam Wainwright Sunday. They pretended to give away his truck. As reported by multiple outlets, the shenanigans began prior to the third inning of the Cardinals' final spring training game when an announcement was made that the club was giving away a free...

Cardinals second base battle ends in tie

Coming into spring training, the St. Louis Cardinals new manager Mike Matheny and general manager John Mozeliak practically handed the second base job to former first round draft pick Tyler Greene. Many believed that the job was Greene's to lose, especially since he was out of options to go back to the minor leagues, as the organization would finally make a commitment to the...

2012 MLB Preview: St. Louis Cardinals

There have been a few changes since last we saw the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals. You may have heard something about this. First, Tony La Russa is not managing the team for the first time since 1996. I didn’t have email in 1996. Second, 1b Albert Pujols has moved on to greener pastures, signing a 10 year, 240 million dollar contract with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim...

Marlins open new ballpark against champion Cards

Perched atop the Miami Marlins' colorful, provocative home-run sculpture is a blue marlin, poised for splashdown whenever the home team hits one out. Call the artwork what you will - gaudy, goofy, grotesque, great - but there's no denying it's new. For the Marlins, that's what this season is all about. They've become a big-spending, attention-grabbing team as...

Cards rest most regulars in final spring tuneup

St. Louis Cardinals prospect Trevor Rosenthal pitched four perfect innings and the World Series champions rested most of their regulars Monday night in their final exhibition tuneup, a 3-2 victory over Double-A Springfield. Ronny Gil, ticketed for Class-A Palm Beach and subbing for Cardinals center fielder Jon Jay, homered off Springfield reliever Keith Butler in the seventh, providing...

Happy Opening Night, St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins Fans!

A lot can happen in one offseason, and the reigning World Champion St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins are a perfect example. The Marlins are kicking off 2012 with a complete face lift: a new name and a spastic jazzy new logo on their uniforms, a new skipper in Ozzie Guillen along with a few high-end acquisitions like Heath Bell, Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle, and Carlos Zambrano...

Zambrano wild in Marlins' final game of spring

MIAMI (AP) -- Alex Rodriguez drove in three runs with a double and a sacrifice fly, and the New York Yankees completed a two-game exhibition sweep in the Miami Marlins' new ballpark by winning 5-2 Monday night. Ozzie Guillen hearts Derek Jeter

The new Miami Marlins manager went on an awesome Ozzie rant today, like only Ozzie can, going on and on and on about Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter. “My favorite player in the history of the game — nobody represents baseball better than that guy, Derek Jeter. Nobody. Not Mickey Mantle, Not Babe Ruth, Not Willie Mays” he said “This guy is God, a baseball god. “ ...

Juan Oviedo and Roberto Hernandez - who were formerly known as Leo Nunez and Fausto Carmona, respectively - will likely be suspended by Major League Baseball for up to six weeks, sources told ESPN's Pedro Gomez on Monday. Both pitchers will be banned after they receive their visas and return to the United States, Gomez noted. The suspensions are believed to be part of the negotiations...

2012 Season Preview

This season is considered the biggest campaign since 1993 for the Miami Marlins as they embark on a new chapter in their history.   A new name, a new ballpark, a new look and a new feel all contribute to what promises to be a historic and memorable season.   For the first time, the Marlins will play their home games in an actual ballpark instead of a converted football stadium...

A New Chapter Begins

Its so close, the day many Marlins fans have been waiting for since we first stepped foot in that orange nightmare with more name changes than Puff Daddy.  For those of us who sat through the all too common rain delays, those of us who baked under the sun on a Sunday afternoon game, this is a dream come true.  Joe/Pro/Dolphins/Whatever was our home for 19 years.  While it was...

The dream begins again today. For a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan like myself, this day represents the first step towards a repeat of greatness.
