Yesterda, Newsday reporter Marc Craig tweeted that New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson “doesn’t think Dickey winning the Cy Young will significantly impact talks.”  Ken Rosenthal’s article today for Fox Sports certainly seems to echo that sentiment as the team is reportedly preparing to offer Dickey a 2-year-extension: The New York Mets could be on the verge of a breakthrough in their negotiations with National League Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey. Or, maybe not. The Mets plan to offer Dickey a two-year contract extension, according to major-league sources. Whether Dickey would accept such a deal remains to be seen. Dickey, 38, is under contract next season for $5 million. He likely would want at least $20 million for two years, but his exact wishes are not known. The Mets have been talking with Dickey while also gauging his trade value with other clubs.” Nothing concrete here, but the fact that the team is making an offer is evidence that their preference is to keep R.A. in a Mets uniform.  Perhaps they’ve gauged his trade value, as Rosenthal suggests, and found it not to be their liking.  In any case, this is a big first step in negotiations with a player that has said repeatedly he wishes to stay with the team and I think it will also play a role in showing a player like David Wright that it’s not ALL about the future when it comes to this front office.  This type of move shows, to some extent, that a real effort will be made to try and compete at a high level in the immediate seasons ahead.
