According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, the New York Mets offered third basemen David Wright a six-year extension worth $100 million on Monday.  In Thanksgiving terms, I liken this to a lukewarm plate of turkey with mashed potatoes, no stuffing or cranberry sauce.  I guess it’s a starting point in that it follows suit with what Ryan Zimmerman got from the Nationals and matches Evan Longoria‘s recent deal with Tampa Bay Rays, but as Rosenthal points out, the Mets are playing with fire as Wright is certain to reject the offer: Photo by Michael G. Baron The standoff between the New York Mets and third baseman David Wright continues. And for the team, the risk is only becoming greater. The Mets offered Wright a six-year, $100 million contract extension on Monday, according to major-league sources. It is an offer that Wright is certain to refuse. Wright, who is under contract for $16 million in 2013, prefers a deal of seven years or longer, sources say. A six-year extension would take Wright through 2019, same as Zimmerman. Longoria, on the other hand, is now under contract through ’22 — and with one of the game’s lowest-revenue clubs. The Mets, playing in New York, should be at the opposite end of the financial spectrum.” Yes, the Mets “should be” on the opposite end of the financial spectrum from the Rays, but what over the last few years suggests they are?  I just don’t see it and until it becomes clear I tend to think the front office will handle the franchise more along the lines of the Rays model than that of a big market team.  So if players like Wright and R.A. Dickey want to stay in New York, they will have to take hometown discounts.  It shouldn’t be that way, but in my opinion, that’s how things appear to be playing out.  Hopefully I’m wrong, but the Wilpons recent track record does nothing to suggest that a return to free spending on large contracts is anything they’re willing to consider.
