After two years as a pinch hitter and reserve first baseman for the Philadelphia Phillies, Ross Gload’s time with the team may be coming to a close.
The 35-year old hit .257 – just 24 points off his career average – but his power numbers were at an all-time low. Gload posted a .257/.276/.327 statline with a .603 OPS that was in Michael Martinez range.
Gload battled a sports hernia all season but chose to play through it rather than endure season-ending surgery. As a result, he wasn’t as effective as normal; Gload couldn’t run the bases very well and almost was unable to play first base down the stretch due to the severity of his injury.
Gload was included on the team’s 25-man postseason roster, going 1-for-2. The two-year deal he signed prior to the 2010 season has expired, meaning Gload will enter the free agency market. With the Phillies having signed left-handed slugger Jim Thome, Gload’s role is all but gone.
