Well the candidates for the fifth starters spot couldn't have made things easier today. Instead of the team having to select someone by default, Livan Hernandez stepped up and made himself the clear favorite for the job while at the same time Freddy Garcia showed he simply isn't ready. Hernandez pitched five innings in which he allowed one run on five hits without allowing a walk and striking out three. Meanwhile, Garcia showed that this truly isn't a competition he's involved in as he allowed five runs over two innings on seven hits, no walks.Hernandez is giving the Mets exactly what they need from the back end of the rotation, someone who can pitch a lot of innings and keep his team in the game. It won't be pretty, he'll give up a lot of hits and have to find his way out of numerous jams but he also won't over tax the pen. At least Hernandez took control of the spot and wasn't just given it.
