The hits just keep on coming for teams playing the Dodgers. The Cardinals roughed up Los Angeles pitching Friday night, defeating the Boys in Blue 11-2, handing Jon Garland his first loss of the season. Garland, who had been activated after spending a month on the disabled list with a strained oblique, lasted just four innings, surrendering five runs on nine hits, two of which were homers. Relievers did not help matters; Matt Guerrier was the only Dodger pitcher to not give up any runs. Albert Pujols hit two home runs.
On the other end of the lopsided score, the offense once again stalled. Matt Kemp has become the Dodgers one-stop shop for all scoring; the center fielder had two hits and the only RBI for Los Angeles (Andre Ethier scored on a wild pitch for the other run). Ethier was also the only Dodger to reach base safely twice.
Other points of interest: Jamie Hoffmann was optioned to Triple-A to make room for Garland… Vicente Padilla will make a rehab start next week. Padilla has been recovering since his arm surgery in February… This loss was the first for the Dodgers since the team began wearing the number 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson on April 15, 2007. They had been 5-0 on Jackie Robinson Day with #42 before Friday.
Clayton Kershaw takes the mound for the Dodgers in Saturday’s game. St. Louis will send righty Kyle McClellan.
