Roy Halladay threw eight shut-out innings, while Jonathan Papelbon records his first Phil save, as the Phils squeak out an opening day win against the Pirates, 1-0. The first six innings involved a pitcher’s duel between Phils’ starter Roy Halladay, who would give up two lead-off hits in the first, before inducing a doubleplay ball, before going through the Pirates’ line-up with little further trouble, allowing only a hit batter in the fourth to reach base, striking out three batters, and Pirates’ starter Erik Bedard, who would scatter four hits and a walk, as he was helped by a couple of doubleplay balls, while striking out four Phils. The Phils finally broke up the 0-0 tie in the seventh as, with runners on second and third, and with one man out, Carlos Ruiz hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Ty Wigginton, who had earlier singled, then stopped at third on John Mayberry Jr’s double, beating right fielder Jose Tabata’s throw to the plate, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. After Halladay kept ...

Phillies 1, Pirates 0

Roy Halladay allowed just two hits in eight innings and the Philadelphia Phillies opened with a 1-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday. The two-time Cy Young winner, making his 10th straight Opening Day start, settled down quickly after a shaky start for the defending NL East champions. Halladay didn't give up a hit after the first inning. Carlos Ruiz had three hits...

Phillies Opening Day: One Game, One Win

In the 10th straight opening day start of his career, Roy Halladay was nearly perfect. Through 8 innings against the Pirates, he allowed only 2 hits, both of which came in the 1st inning. After the 1st, he was unhittable. And it is a very good thing, too. Because the Phillies offense got off to a bit of a slow start with a few exceptions. Carlos Ruiz went 3 for 3 and drove in the...

Halladay gem lifts Phillies

Roy Halladay outdueled Erik Bedard, pitching eight strong innings as the visiting Philadelphia Phillies opened the season with a 1-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Halladay (1-0) allowed back-to-back singles to Alex Presley and Jose Tabata leading off the first inning. The two-time Cy Young winner then got Andrew McCutchen to ground into a double play. A hit a batter in the...

Philadelphia Phillies storyline: Goliath versus Gotham

Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies has waited his entire career to dominate batters with October mastery.  Will Ryan Howard provide Doc, Cliff Lee and Hunter Pence with their first taste of the ultimate bubbly?  Will the red pinstripes revisit the Fall Classic and find a familiar foe?  Will this rival offer an extra incentive for a 2nd parade down Broad Street? TAL'...

2012 Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix: MLB Opening Day goes to the pitchers

Yum, baseball is back! Hope you had a starting pitcher going on Thursday. Just about any one will work. Most of the Opening Day aces lived up to their billing on the first full day of the baseball season. Roy Halladay and Justin Verlander proved they are still the best pitchers in fantasy baseball by tossing eight scoreless innings apiece. Halladay shut down the Pirates while...

The Importance Of A Closer

During the 2011-2012 Phillies offseason, the club was looking to either resign Ryan Madson or go elsewhere.  Ryan Madson's asking price was entirely too much, so the Phils went out and brought in the best available closer on the market in Jonathan Papelbon.   Instead of paying $44 million on an arguably unproven closer in Madson, Ruben Amaro Jr. gave a proven Papelbon a four...

MLB Insiders: Philadelphia Phillies

The Pirates open the 2012 season with a three-games series at PNC Park against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Bucs will toss lefty Erik Bedard in the opener. The Phillies will counter with right-hander Roy Halladay.

Boston Red Sox suffer bullpen letdown to open season

The Red Sox had a number of potential concerns coming into 2012, including a bullpen bereft of it most reliable arms.  With former closer Jonathan Papelbon now a Philly and Daniel Bard moved into the starting rotation, the club had to wait and see whether its off-season acquisitions could be suitable replacements. One game in the concerns remain.  No relief for the Red Sox as bullpen...
