Center fielder Lorenzo Cain was back in the Royals lineup Friday night for the first time since April 10 at Oakland.

Cain went 1-for-1 in that game, but left after three innings. He strained his left groin while making a

catch of Daric Burton's liner to the wall and doubling off Collin Cowgill.

Cain played in only five games, none at Kauffman Stadium, before the injury, which caused him to miss 79

games. He suffered a setback in May while rehabbing with Class AA Northwest Arkansas, tearing his left hip

flexor.

Cain hit .371 with a 1.193 OPS in 27 spring training games, with 11 doubles, five home runs and 20 runs.

He began the season batting second, but when he returned against the White Sox, he was hitting ninth.

Yost said he foresees Cain as a middle-of-the-lineup hitter in the future.

"We still want to mix (Jarrod) Dyson in, we don't want to leave him out of the mix, and we have (Jason)

Bourgeois, but I imagine Lorenzo will play five days a week," Yost said.

"I just want to give him the opportunity to be the player we think he can be. He is an above-average

defender out there and we think he has the ability to swing the bat and drive in some runs."

Cain had a run-producing single in the second inning and scored on an Alex Gordon two-out single. He

walked in the fourth inning and scored on an Alcides Escobar bunt single. He also doubled with two out in

the eighth and scored. He finished 3-for-6 with three runs scored, an RBI and a double in the 9-8 loss in

14 innings to the White Sox.

Cain also showed off his arm, throwing out Kevin Youkilis, who attempted to go from first to third on a

Paul Konerko sixth-inning single.
