KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Royals right-hander Wade Davis seems likely to miss his next scheduled start Wednesday against the Twins after the loss of his stepbrother, who collapsed and died during a softball game last weekend. Davis was told his stepbrother, Dustin Huguley, died in Florida on Saturday as the Royals were playing the Mets. Davis had pitched five innings in a no-decision Friday. Huguley's obituary indicated the funeral would be at 10 a.m. Wednesday. "They grew up together and literally were best friends as well as stepbrothers, so this has been very tough on him," manager Ned Yost said. "We're going day to day on this with Wade and just doing what we can to help him through this." If Davis doesn't return for Wednesday's start, the Royals could place him on bereavement leave and recall left-hander Danny Duffy from Triple-A Omaha. Duffy is scheduled to pitch that day as well. Yost also could turn to Luis Mendoza, who started the season in the rotation before being demoted to the bullpen.
