The Guru Contributing Writer With the ALCS tied 1-1, great starting pitching performances from the Tigers and dramatic comebacks from the Red Sox, the series got some added juice Monday courtesy of today's Game 3 starter Justin Verlander. Shane Victorino led the league this season in hit-by-pitches with 18 during the regular season and he has been hit five times in seven playoff games this year, a MLB record. Verlander said there are times that Victorino is getting "hit by strikes." Victorino countered by saying jumping "in front of a 95 mph fastball" is not "what I'm trying to do." After Monday's back and forth between Verlander and Victorino, it should be interesting to see how things get handled where it counts - between the white lines. What say you, Red Sox Lifer's? Will Verlander bean Victorino? Follow The Guru on Twitter @TheGuruGS More musings from The Guru.

Red Sox Shane Victorino gets hit, ties record

Shane Victorino now holds a record he probably would rather not hold, but one he is surely proud of nonetheless.  The Boston Red Sox outfielder is the all-time postseason record-holder (tied with Alex Rodriguez) for hit-by-pitch.  Victorino was hit for the ninth time in his postseason career last night. The HBP came in the bottom of the first inning.  This would be one of the...

Verlander-Victorino feud brewing?

Shane Victorino has been lauded for making hay from the batter's box ever since he started hitting exclusively right-handed. But that righty stance -- or just the way Victorino stands in the box -- has some people thinking that's also why Victorino has been hit by pitches five times this postseason and an American League-leading 18 times this year (11 of which came in the...

David Ortiz’s grand slam saves Boston

The Boston Red Sox trailed, 5-0, heading into the bottom of the sixth and seemed certain to head to Detroit in a 0-2 series deficit. Dustin Pedroia doubled to left center to score Shane Victorino in the sixth inning.   In the eighth-inning David Ortiz hit a grand slam to tie the game, and then a Jarrod Saltalamacchia walk-off single to left with nobody out in the bottom of the...

Red Sox ready for Anibal Sanchez's kitchen sink approach in Game 5

Aside from Shane Victorino the Red Sox went into Game 1 of the ALCS blind against Tigers right-hander Anibal Sanchez. Victorino had seen him plenty of times dating back to their Phillies-Marlins days but the rest of the Boston roster had a combined 43 plate appearances against the veteran right-hander. There was very little history and it showed. With his kitchen sink approach Sanchez...

Tigers turn to Verlander after Game 2 collapse

The last time Justin Verlander took the mound, his team's season was on the line. The stakes won't be quite that high for his next start, but the Detroit Tigers could certainly use another brilliant performance from their star right-hander after blowing a chance to take control of the AL championship series. Detroit wasted a five-run lead Sunday night in Game 2, allowing...

Tigers forget Game 2, focus on home stand

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers have done the math. They have home-field advantage in a best-of-five series for the American League pennant, and they have Justin Verlander, Anibal Sanchez and Max Scherzer pitching in four of the five games. Those are the starters who just set a major-league record by taking no-hitters into the sixth inning of three straight postseason games. Would...

Mike Napoli’s Home Run Gives Red Sox 1-0 Lead in ALCS Game 3 vs. Tigers (GIF)

The Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers have been locked in a pitching duel for most of Tuesday’s Game 3 of the ALCS, with starting pitchers John Lackey and Justin Verlander combining for zero runs allowed through six innings. The deadlock was broken in the top of the seventh inning when Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli hit a Verlander fast ball deep to left field and into one of...

Erin Andrews nearly calls Justin Verlander 'Justin Bieber'?

Justin Verlander had just thrown eight innings of 1-run ball, striking out 10-plus for the 6th time in his postseason career (MLB record) and Erin Andrews didn't get his name right in the heat of the moment when asking Mike Napoli a post-game question:  Justin Bieber? Abakingpowder? You know, it might be Justin 'Vee... Verlander' but most people on the internet...

Lackey Outduels Verlander; Wins Game 3, 1-0

(Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)John Lackey pitched the game of his life tonight—and it was just a little bit better than Justin Verlander. In the process, the Red Sox grabbed a 2-1 series lead by beating the Tigers, 1-0 at Comerica Park. The only offense The Carmine Hose needed came from Mike Napoli, who clouted a solo HR in the seventh inning—right after the FOX broadcast...

Boston holds off Tigers 1-0 behind Lackey, bullpen

John Lackey edged Justin Verlander in the latest duel of these pitching-rich playoffs, and Boston's bullpen shut down Detroit's big boppers with the game on the line to lift the Red Sox over the Tigers 1-0 Tuesday for a 2-1 lead in the AL championship series. Mike Napoli homered in the seventh inning off Verlander, and Detroit's attempt at a rally fell short in the eighth...

Mike Napoli’s Solo Shot, Beard-Tugging Celebration Among Best Images from Red Sox’ Game 3 Win (Photos)

The Red Sox faced a power outage and the lights-out pitching of Justin Verlander in the same contest, and still, they managed to come out on top in Game 3. One swing of the bat from Mike Napoli proved to be all that Boston needed on Tuesday night, as the first baseman drilled a solo shot in the seventh inning to put the Sox on the board. With Verlander on the mound, John Lackey...

Napoli, Lackey lead Sox to Game 3 win

Did Erin Andrews Almost Call Justin Verlander, Justin Bieber? (Video)

Mike Napoli was the subject of Fox reporter Aren Andrew’s post game interview after his solo home run on Justin Verlander sealed the Red Sox’s victory over the Tigers. But Erin had a little difficulty pronouncing pitcher Verlander’s name, and now the question is was she really thinking about the Biebs? Sounds like she almost said Bieber to me, but of course she denied it....

Erin Andrews Nearly Refers To Justin Verlander As “Justin Bieber” In Postgame Interview

After calling Jim Leyland “Joe” earlier in the game, Erin Andrews nearly had another embarrassing name screwup in a postgame interview with Mike Napoli. When asking Napoli, who homered for the game’s only run, about his success against Verlander, Andrews had to stop herself from channeling her inner-Belieber at the last second.
