Carlos Ruiz posted career highs in batting average, doubles, HRs and RBI. The Phillies announced Monday that the club will pick up his $5 million option for 2013. The Phillies catcher was also announced as a finalist for the NL Gold Glove. The Philadelphia Phillies made some unsurprising roster moves on Monday. Most of the moves seemed like only formalities and were foregone conclusions. The Phillies picked up Carlos Ruiz’s option for 2013. Ruiz will make $5 million for the club next year. Ruben Amaro told the press that he expects talks with Ruiz on a contract extension “will probably” take place at some point. Ruiz was also announced as a NL Gold Glove finalist along with teammate Jimmy Rollins. In addition, the Phillies and Placido Polanco each declined Polanco’s option for next year. The third baseman has battled injuries and ineffectiveness and has had a hard time staying on the field. Polanco will receive a $1 million buyout and will become a free agent. Whether the 37 year old plans to play next year was not immediately known. The Phillies also declined options on reliever Jose Contreras and INF Ty Wiggington. Each player will receive a $500,000 buyout. Contreras was solid for the Phillies as a reliever but was derailed the last two seasons because of elbow injuries. Ty Wiggington was acquired from the Colorado Rockies, and hit 11 HRs and 43 RBI while taking on a much larger role than expected with injuries to Placido Polanco and Ryan Howard. Wiggington was owed $4 million on his option while Contreras was owed $2.5 million.
