Now that the Yankees have an opening at the DH they have been in touch with Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, and Carlos Pena, but that is not all. They have also been contact by the agents for Vladimir Guerrero and Raul Ibanez, according to Ken Davidoff of Newsday.
The Yankees reportedly only have $1-$2 million to spend on a DH so this is going to be a wait them out and see who’s willing to settle for almost nothing type of situation.
Ibanez, 39, had just a .289 OBP and .707 OPS in 144 games last year and earned $11.5 million in the final year of a three year deal. Guerrero, soon to be 37, had a .317 OBP and .733 OPS in 145 games last year where he earned $8 million. Both played the majority of their games in hitter friendly parks.
It’s hard to say if either would be willing to accept such little money to play for the Yankees or if the Yankees would even want either of the two. My thinking is that the Yanks may hold out for one or two non-roster invitees in the end. It is...
