Since hearing that he had hit the market, the Yankees contacted the Mets and asked them about the availability of left handed starter Jonathon Niese, according to Andy Martino of the NY Daily News.
The Mets are looking for a “placeholder” starter and a big prospect as well, according to Joel Sherman of the NY Post. The Yankee have a number of pitchers who could serve as a “placeholder” but they would probably prefer to use Hector Noesi, David Phelps, or Adam Warren as a centerpiece in a deal for a non-elite starter.
The Mets and the Yankees don’t often trade with each other. It seems unlikely that they would make a deal here, but it’s certainly worth exploring.
