The Yankees don’t seem likely to trade for a starting pitcher if things continue to go the way they have for almost the past month, but if they do they prefer Matt Garza to Ryan Dempster, according to Dave Kaplan of the CSN.
Garza is much younger than Dempster, 28 to 35, and is under team control through 2013 while Dempster is a free agent at the end of the year. Garza also has slightly better numbers over his career, a 3.85 ERA, 7.6 K/9, and 3.1 BB/9 to Dempster’s 4.33 ERA, 7.8 K/9, and 4.1 BB/9. There is also the fact that Garza has played most of his career in the AL while Dempster is a life-long NL pitcher.
If the Yankees do get into the trade market for a starting pitcher they wouldn’t necessarily just go after Garza based on preference as cost is certainly going to play a role. The two will have very different costs in terms of prospects. Garza will also be around for at least a year and a half and Dempster isn’t likely to get a $12 million qualifying offer that would earn the Yankees a compensation pick if he left. So while they might prefer one over the other, they might be able to afford one more easily.
