Ryan Dempster hit a notable achievement on Sunday afternoon.
Dempster recorded his 2,000th career strikeout in the top of the sixth inning. Alberto Callaspo was Dempster’s 2,000th victim.
Dempster now has 83 strikeouts on the season. His single-season high came in 2000 with the Marlins when the 16-year veteran recorded 209 strikeouts. He’s on pace for 210 this year.
Only Andy Pettitte (2,368), CC Sabathia (2,294), Roy Halladay (2,201) and A.J. Burnett (2,070) have more Ks among active players. Dempster passed Andy Benes on the career list on Sunday. He now ranks 68th all-time.

(Photo: John E. Sokolowski, USA TODAY Sports) BOSTON-- According to a tweet from Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, Boston Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks is back from his rehab assignment with the Pawtucket Red Sox, while multi-purpose utility man Pedro Ciriaco has been designated for assignment. Cafardo tweeted this regarding the move earlier today. Pedro Ciriaco...
Felix Doubront has been something of an enigma for the Red Sox this season but has had solid starts in his last few outings. In fact, Doubront has racked up four straight quality starts after Sunday’s day game against the Angels.
The right-hander allowed three runs on six hits over six innings on Saturday with four strikeouts. Though he eventually look the loss, Doubront said...
Boston Red Sox right-hander Clay Buchholz could have his next start pushed back at least a couple days.
Buchholz, 9-0 with a 1.71 ERA this season, left his start Saturday in the seventh inning in the nightcap of a day-night doubleheader with what the team called ''neck tightness.''
Red Sox manager John Farrell indicated that Buchholz may not be ready to throw his...
A fan proposing at a baseball game isn’t usually news. When it comes at an opponent’s ballpark? Well, that’s a little more interesting.
Some love-struck Boston fan popped the question during a Red Sox game on Monday, but it wasn’t at Friendly Fenway Park that he did so. Instead it was at Tropicana Field, in front of a half-full dome of people probably a little surprised that...
It appears nothing can derail Clay Buccholz‘s dominant start to the 2013 season.
After missing an appearance due to soreness in his right AC joint, the righty pitched five innings of scoreless baseball on Sunday in a 3-0 win over the Yankees. Buchholz struck out four and allowed just two hits and one walk.
That performance lowered his season ERA to 1.62. Buchholz is 8-0 on the...
David Ortiz had three RBIs and Dustin Pedroia added two RBIs to back up a strong start from Boston Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz in a 7-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night at historic Fenway Park. The win gave the Red Sox a split of the day/night doubleheader.

The Red Sox surge over the weekend helped them retain the best record in the American League, and the third best record in all of Major League Baseball. On Sunday the Red Sox used the long ball to power their way past the Los Angeles Angels, taking the rubber game of the series and winning the series. Here are the 3 stars of the game.

2:45 p.m.: Will Middlebrooks is back, and the odd man out, as has been speculated, is Pedro Ciriaco.
Ciriaco had his shining moments last season on a team that had little else to offer, but he hasn’t been anything but an average fill-in on the big league roster this year. With Jose Iglesias playing some truly inspired baseball in Middlebrooks’ absence, it only made sense to keep...

There were certainly some notable family ties for the Red Sox when it came to this year’s MLB draft.
John Farrell’s youngest son, Luke, was drafted in the sixth round on Friday. On Saturday, Carl Yastrzemski’s grandson, Mike, got his call in the 14th round (429th overall).
This is actually the second time that Mike Yastrzemski has been drafted. He was selected by the Red Sox...

The Boston Red Sox (37-24) and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (26-34) play a day-night doubleheader at Fenway Park today.
The Sox have won four of five and start the day with a two-game lead in the AL East. The Sox were 0-6 against the Angels last year.
The Angels have been a disappointment this season. Los Angeles has dropped five of its last six...
