Boston Red Sox
New York Yankees
Sunday was supposed to be Jon Lester‘s turn in the Red Sox rotation, but his first start since the All-Star break was pushed back until Tuesday night in order to give the lefty some more time off.
Instead, it will be Ryan Dempster on the mound for Boston, as the team tries to take the rubber match of a three-game series against the Yankees.
Dempster is 5-8 this season with a 4.24 ERA and 104 strikeouts. He hasn’t factored in the decision of the last three games he started in.
Dempster will be opposed by New York ace CC Sabathia. Sabathia has a 9-8 record this season with a 4.07 ERA.
Sabathia will be facing a Red Sox lineup that has a few changes from Saturday’s 5-2 loss. Mike Napoli will be back at first base after Mike Carp took over on Saturday, and Shane Victorino will be in right field. Daniel Nava, who played in right on Saturday will also get the night off, and Jonny Gomes will stay in left field. The Yankees, meanwhile, will send out the same exact lineup.

Christopher Evans/ Boston Herald BOSTON-- According to a report from Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com, Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell announced on Saturday that Ryan Dempster, not Jon Lester would be on the bump for tonight’s series finale against the New York Yankees. Lester will start on Tuesday night against the Tampa Bay Rays. There is apparently nothing wrong on the injury...
It's no secret that Jon Lester has had his struggles this season. After getting off to a flying 6-0 start, he's been 2-6 with a 6.27 ERA over his last 11 starts, according to CSNNE. Talk about a downhill slide. So, the question becomes do we use him as a bargaining chip in a possible trade? He has a $13 million option for next year, but...
Boston Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester is having his next start pushed back two days, and Ryan Dempster is taking his place on the mound Sunday against the New York Yankees.
Red Sox manager John Farrell announced the change Saturday before the teams met for the middle game of the three-game weekend series.
Lester (8-6, 4.58 ERA) has struggled since starting 6-0 start this season...
8 a.m. ET: These Tampa Bay Rays aren’t going anywhere.
After blanking the Red Sox in Monday night’s series opener, the Rays now trail Boston by a mere 1/2 game in the American League East standings. Joe Maddon’s club has been on an absurd tear of late, winning 18 of its last 20 games, and the Rays can claim sole possession of first place with another win on Tuesday.
Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here...
highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as
satisfying as a good morning dump.
Mariano Rivera has jogged from the
right-field bullpen to the Fenway Park mound a number of times in his 18-year
career. He's probably never been greeted like he was by the rival Red Sox fans
One night after getting shut out in their series opener with the Rays, the Red Sox will have to bounce back — and slow Tampa Bay’s massive momentum — to stay atop the American League East on Tuesday night at Fenway Park.
The Rays have won 18 of their last 20 games, including a dominating 3-0 win over the Sox on Monday night, and are just a 1/2 game back of Boston for the division...
Sometimes, when the Red Sox aren’t doing well, I start
swearing at the TV.
And when I start swearing at the TV, my wife will leave our
comfy couch and go read in the other room. Anyone who watched the early
portions of Sunday’s marathon win against the Yankees can guess it didn’t take
her long to uproot herself from our living room to head into the other room.
The Cubs are in the headlines again in late July, but for them, that only means that they have salable commodities available to contending teams at the trade deadline.
Last season it was right-hander Ryan Dempster, who vetoed a trade to Atlanta and was sent to Texas as a two-month stretch rental. This year the hot item is right-hander Matt Garza, and the Rangers again are among...
What has been an incredible season up to this point may boil down to what happens tonight. Fenway Park is the site once again of a crucial game between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees.
The Red Sox are owners of the best record in the American League at 59-40, but a series loss to the Yankees (52-45) could be devastating to a team trying...
6:02 p.m.: There was some news to come out of Sunday’s pregame media availability.
First, Andrew Bailey will indeed have shoulder surgery, meaning his season is over. Bailey, who was placed on the disabled list Friday, previously stated that surgery was an option, and he has now officially decided to go down that route. Bailey will likely be out until the second half of the 2014...
It was somewhat expected that the Boston Red Sox may have a sluggish game Monday following Sunday night/Monday morning’s extra-inning game with the Yankees. But to be held to two hits by Matt Moore was a little surprising.
Because of that, the Tampa Bay Rays (59-41) are now a half-game out of first place in the AL East with the chance to take...
CC Sabathia (9-8, 4.07 ERA) is in charge of the rubber match against the Sox tonight as he goes up against Ryan Dempster (5-8, 4.24 ERA). Sabathia is trying to rebound from what he called a “terrible” first half. He’s trying to fix an arm slot issue from his last start. He’s 1-1 against Boston this year, including beating them with 7 1/3 innings of one run ball back on May...
After falling yesterday, the Boston Red Sox look to take the three-game set tonight in the Trojan rubber game against the New York Yankees at historic Fenway Park.
First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball. You can also catch the game online at WatchESPN where available. And if you can't catch the game on television...
