Chicago-cubs-starting
Jeff Samardzija pumped his fist vigorously Saturday night after working out of a major jam in the eighth inning. Samardzija released his emotions after striking out the Padres' Logan Forsythe with the bases loaded as the Chicago Cubs held on for a 3-2 win. “He bore down and got two huge outs" manager Dale Sveum said after Samardzija (8-11) retired Jedd Gyorko on a fly to left and striking out Fosythe. "That’s why you leave a guy like that in the game." Samardzija limited the Padres to one run after loading the bases with no outs in the eighth. The inning started when Samardzija issued his first walk of the game to pinch hitter Mark Kotsay. But Sveum showed full confidence in Samardzija who struck out seven and remains on track to reach the 200-inning and 200-strikeout marks with 176 1/3 innings and 175 strikeouts with probably six starts left. Samardzija has allowed three runs in his past 20 innings dating back to the fourth inning of his start against Cincin...

Guest Column: A Look at How the 2012 Cubs Draft is Going

It seemed a lot of you liked it when WISCGRAD did a brief rundown of the 2013 draft and how the draftees are doing so far, so WISCGRAD just went ahead and did the 2012 draft as well. What a guy... Cubs 3, Padres 2

Jeff Samardzija pitched eight impressive innings and Darwin Barney homered and drove in two runs as the Chicago Cubs beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 on Saturday night. In his second straight solid outing, Samardzija (8-11) limited the damage to one run in the eighth inning when the Padres twice loaded the bases and cut the lead to one run. Samardzija allowed two runs on seven hits...

Donnie Murphy Is The Man

If you have at least one competitive fantasy baseball team you can understand how rigorous the season can get for owners. Whether it’s setting your lineup everyday, checking the waiver wire, checking what your players did and what your opponent’s players did, it can get tough. A coping mechanism to keep yourself involved is to get highly invested (biased) in certain players....

Sunday Funnies: Javier Baez is making noise

Remember before Theo was here?Hope all pinned on the 3 Cs - Colvin/Castro/Cashner?The Cubs had Kosuke Fukudome and Carlos Pena, Doug Davis and Ramon Ortiz.Mike Quade.Koyie.The giant empty promise of a heavily promoted, ridiculous Cubs/Red Sox series where we watched the Cubs give up 15 runs on National TV complete with Kevin Youkilis making a comet out of a Scott Maine pitch.I tried...

Win 55 and the drive towards mediocrity

The Chicago Cubs just won their 55th game of the 2013 season, which doesn’t sound all that great, except for the part where it took them until September 10 to get win #55 last season.  Starlin Castro broke up the no-hitter early (are you still participating in our No-Hit Streak Contest?) and the Cubs had just enough offense and just enough Jeff Samardzija and Kevin Gregg to eke...

Chicago Cubs lose rubber match in 15-innings

The Chicago Cubs came into the day with a series draw against the San Diego Padres after splitting the first two games. Today’s pitching match up saw former Cub Andrew Cashner against southpaw Chris Rusin, who has been pitching extremely well since filling Matt Garza’s rotation spot. Runs were hard to come by in this game, and that was pretty evident just by looking at the box...

Cubs resembling expansion team, building ‘from the ground up’

Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer were clear about their intentions as soon as they took over the Cubs’ front office in the fall of 2011 and by spring training last year new manager Dale Sveum had joined the chorus: The Cubs were not “rebuilding.” They were “building.” A new direction. New organizational structure from the ground up. New culture. New business practices. New...

Nate Schierholtz has a painful, run-scoring at bat

This was one hell of a wacky play from Sunday's Cubs-Padres game. With the bases loaded and none out in the top of the 13th, Nate Schierholtz hit a grounder to first baseman Jesus Guzman that looked like it would be a surefire double play ball. Except...things didn't really go that way for the Padres. As he went to run out of the batters box, Schierholtz twisted his ankle...

Future Alert: Baez Still A Monster, Trio of Top Prospects Expected in AFL

It has been about three weeks since the last edition of “Future Alert”, and I apologize for the delay.  The biggest news from the past three weeks is that Albert Almora and Jorge Soler will not make their long-awaited returns to action during this regular season, but are expected to play for the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League along with Kris Bryant. Iowa - Mike Olt‘s...

Cubs August 24 Minor League Recap

The Cubs affiliates went 6-1 on the night including good pitching performances from Boise’s Duane Underwood and Daytona’s Corey Black as the right-handers helped their teams mover close to the playoffs. 3B Mike Olt was 4-4 at Iowa and Jacob Rogers accounted of both of Boise’s runs.

Five Goog Things: Sit Down, Chicago Edition

I have a question for all of you, the loyal congregation. “Were you not entertained?” Wow what a week end by our Padres. They pretty much turned in every kind of game possible from the monumental comeback to the pitcher’s duel and finally the bizarre. But as the dust settled, they were victorious over the Cubs, taking two of three to win the series and finish their longest...

Daily Friar 8.25.13

About the only good thing that the Cubs have going for them right now is some core young guys that should make them better in the future. The same could be said about the Padres as well. The Padres ran into one of those guys last night in the form of Jeff Samardzija. He was able to limit the Padres only to two runs through eight innings. While they did try to mount another comeback...

While You Were Drinking: Game 129 (SD vs CHC)

Sometimes things get a little fuzzy after a night in the pub. Here’s a friendly reminder of what you might have missed while you were drinking. After coming back from Edinson Volquez‘ (hopefully) last appearance as a Friar Friday night, the Padres and Eric Stults came ever so close to beating Jeff Samardzija and the Cubs Saturday night. But — as the saying goes — close is...
