San Diego Padres To Retire Trevor Hoffman’s Number

Obviously this was coming, but the San Diego Padres have announced they will retire Trevor Hoffman’s number (51) later this season. The future Hall of Famer and Major League career saves leader will be honored in a postgame ceremony on August 21. The 43-year-old Hoffman earned 552 of his 601 career saves with the Padres from 1993-2008. Hoffman was a seven-time All-Star and finished in the top six in the National League Cy Young Award voting four times. He was also robbed of the Cy Young Award in 1998, when several writers left his name off the ballot because they didn’t believe a closer should be eligible. The award went to Tom Glavine instead, despite the best season of Hoffman’s career and one of the best by a reliever in baseball history. Hoffman will be the fifth Padre to have his number retired, joining Steve Garvey (No. 6), Randy Jones (35), Dave Winfield (31) and Tony Gwynn (19).
