NEW YORK (AP) -- Anibal Sanchez shut down a Yankees lineup minus injured Derek Jeter, and the Detroit Tigers capitalized on a missed call by an umpire to beat New York 3-0 Sunday for a 2-0 lead in the AL championship series. Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda pitched perfect ball into the sixth inning. But the slumping New York hitters looked lost a day after their captain broke his ankle in the 12th inning of a 6-4 loss. Making his second postseason start, Sanchez pitched three-hit ball deep into the game to make Tigers manager Jim Leyland's handling of a bullpen without struggling closer Jose Valverde a lot easier. The Tigers scored twice in the eighth after second base umpire Jeff Nelson missed a call at second base. Game 3 in the best-of-seven series is Tuesday night in Detroit, with reigning AL MVP Justin Verlander starting for the Tigers.

Leyland unsure if Valverde will stay in closer role

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland has something to think about before Sunday's second game of the American League Championship Series -- whether to change closers for the 169th game of the year. After closer Jose Valverde was hammered for a second straight postseason game, Leyland hinted that a shift might be imminent. "We're going to discuss this as a staff,"...

Tigers' rotation continues to sparkle

As most of the baseball world speculates why the New York Yankees are failing on a stage where they're accustomed to succeeding, perhaps it's time for the experts take a look at what the Detroit Tigers are doing right. The Tigers lead the American League Championship Series two games to none after Sunday's 3-0 Game 2 victory because their starting pitching has been better...

Tigers should close door on Valverde

Jim Leyland was thinking about it. That much, we knew. The evidence was beyond the Yankee Stadium wall, in left-center field, where Octavio Dotel warmed up in the visiting bullpen. He stirred one batter into the ninth inning Saturday night, after Russell Martin's single started the ninth inning from hell for the Detroit Tigers. Jose Valverde is the Tigers' closer. He has...

Tigers' Leyland yanks Valverde as closer

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland announced Sunday afternoon he will not use closer Jose Valverde in that role in, at least temporarily. Leyland did not have a timetable for Valverde to return as closer, but said the pitcher still has the long-term job. Valverde has a 27.00 ERA in 2 1/3 innings of relief during three postseason appearances. On Saturday night, he allowed four...

NEW YORK (AP) -- Jose Valverde didn't finish Game 2 of the AL championship series for the Detroit Tigers but retains his closer's role for now. Verlander the next obstacle for slumping Yankees

The Detroit Tigers have shut down the New York Yankees so far in the AL championship series - and Justin Verlander hasn't thrown a single pitch. That changes Tuesday night when the Detroit ace takes the mound for Game 3. The Tigers won the first two games in New York, and the only runs the Yankees scored came in a four-run ninth inning against reliever Jose Valverde in the opener...

Valverde's struggles must be addressed

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland is loyal to his players, perhaps to a fault. If the Tigers are going to beat the New York Yankees in the ALCS, that will have to change. Leyland has stuck with struggling players like Brandon Inge, Brennan Boesch and Ryan Raburn before admitting recently that he stuck with Raburn too long. Inge didn't stick with the Tigers past April, finding...
