While making his first appearance against major league hitters since September of 2010, New York Mets starter Johan Santana tossed two scoreless innings while allowing just one hit.  The 32-year-old lefty threw 29 pitches — 17 for strikes — ranging from 86-89 MPH, and on one pitch the former Cy-Young award winner touched 90 MPH.

According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, Santana got a glowing report from one scout who was in attendance.

Cardinals catcher, Yadier Molina — who faced Santana in the second inning of yesterday’s contest – told Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch “I just didn’t see it. He had me fooled,” in regards to the left handers change up.

Following his start, Santana spoke with reporters, saying he felt “pretty good” after his outing:

Finally, I had an opportunity to go out there and finally get the first one out of the way.  I tried to throw all my pitches and tried to get adjusted to the mound. And, it worked out pretty good. … I threw a couple sliders and a couple change-ups.  Overall I think the key was on how I feel. And, I feel pretty good.  I didn’t know in the beginning what it was gonna be like, if they were swinging right away or gonna take some pitches.  The first pitch I threw, I thought was pretty good, and it was a ball.  It was a challenge.  I had to find the strike zone and locate all my pitches.  That’s why, I was trying to throw my fastball out there. The next couple of days, I’ll try to throw my bullpen and see if I can be ready for my next start. But again, the way I feel right now and the way I end up the game today, it’s was good. It’s a good sign. So hopefully, we’ll be back on the mound in five days.”

Well, it doesn’t get more encouraging than that.  As Jay stated last night, “It’s hard to argue with the results and while I know there’s a long way to go before we can get excited about having Johan completely back, there’s nothing wrong with enjoying each step along the way.”
