Mets ace Johan Santana has been honored by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg for pitching the first no-hitter in team history.
Bloomberg gave Santana the key to the city before the Mets played the crosstown-rival Yankees on Friday night, telling the left-hander ''it doesn't open any doors.''
Santana threw his no-hitter June 1 against the Cardinals in the franchise's 8,020th game. He thanked the mayor and all of New York for treating his family well.
Bloomberg marveled at Santana's feat, especially since the two-time Cy Young Award winner missed the 2011 season while recovering from shoulder surgery. Bloomberg said the achievement represented ''the spirit of New York.''
Bloomberg gave all the members of the 2009 World Series champion Yankees honorary keys after their ticker-tape parade.

They get swept, they sweep. They get swept, they sweep. That’s how it’s looked since Friday, June 8, when the Mets walked into Yankee Stadium, fresh off dropping two in Washington, with Johan Santana making his first nerve-wracking appearance since his no-hitter. It didn’t go well.
The gopher was well-fed by the time Sunday afternoon came around and the Yankees smirked...
Dillon Gee (left) and Tim Byrdak (second to right) definitely win outfit of the day. By the way, if you can’t tell, that’s Dillon Gee, Tom Goodwin, Bobby Parnell, Jay Horwitz, Jon Niese, Tim Byrdak, and Eric Langill (bullpen catcher).
Here’s another picture, where Mets PR man Jay Horwitz makes another appearance:
By the way, if you can’t tell, that’s Josh Thole, Jeff...
Frank Francisco is not having a good season, but that's done nothing to deter the reliever's confidence. Francisco's Mets will take on the Yankees for three games beginning on Friday, and he had a simple message for his upcoming opponents. "I can't wait to face those chickens," Francisco told the New York Post. "I want to strike out the side against...
Chris Young pitched 6 innings giving up 3 runs on a home run.
The Mets lost to the Yankees today by a score of 4-3. Young pitched well for 6 innings before giving up a 3 run homer to Ibanez. Jon Rauch gave up a game winning homer to Eric Chavez.
The Mets runs came on a solo shot by Kirk, an RBI by Thole, and a base hit by Chris Young. Daniel Murphy took Soriano to the warning track...

New York Mets starter, Chris Young was cruising through six scoreless innings — allowing just two hits — before the wheels fell off in the top half of the seventh inning. With the Mets leading 3-0, the 6’10″ right hander walked New York Yankee first baseman Mark Teixeira to start the frame. Nick Swisher followed the seven-pitch walk with a...
Mets closer Frank Francisco sure knows how to egg on his team's cross-town rivals the New York Yankees. Right before an important three game series this weekend, he calls them names and calls them out.
"I can't wait to face those chickens," Francisco told The New York Post right before the Yankees cross the road (actually the Grand Central Parkway) to meet the...
At least somebody isn't afraid to talk trash about a cross-town rival.
"I can't wait to face those chickens," Mets closer Frank Francisco said when asked about playing the Yankees in this weekend's Subway Series at Citi Field. "I want to strike out the side against them. I've done it before."
Before Francisco could elaborate on his "chickens...
Mets vs. Yankees Picks
The weekend is here and we’ve got a couple MLB picks for you to look at.
The Mets are doing their thing right now and can be found in second place in the NL East. They’re winners of three straight and now get their chance at redemption at their crosstown rivals.
On Friday we’ll see Jonathon Niese come up against veteran hurler Andy Pettitte...
The New York Mets (29-32) beat the New York Yankees (41-28) in game one of Subway Series Part II by the score of 6 to 4 tonight at Citi Field.
Jon Niese started for the Mets tonight and allowed two runs on eight hits, while walking one and striking out five in 6 2/3 innings pitched. Niese lowered his ERA down from 3.82 and is now 5-3 with a 3.75 ERA. Niese let up one...
By many accounts the Red Sox's have stepped up their efforts to trade Kevin Youkilis, once the heart and sole of Boston he now appears to be on the outside looking in at a clubhouse that may possibly be in total disarray. It's said that the Mets are weeks away from deciding if they're buyers and even if they venture into the trade market it will only be for smaller pieces...
In 2006 the Minnesota Twins boasted two of the best left-handed pitchers in baseball – Johan Santana and Francisco Liriano. Fast forward six years and we get a Santana who missed last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery and several seasons removed from his last dominant season, and a Liriano who is barely a month removed from being in a bullpen role for arguably the worst...
