There’s no other way to put tonight but this way, it was a disappointment.  The Mets were given a 4-0 lead by the Pirates and Erik Bedard early, only to watch Santana give it up on a late inning long ball.  Ultimately, the Mets would lose on something they themselves were unable to do earlier in the game…hit a sacrifice fly.

Michael McKenry‘s two-run game tying homer off of Johan Santana in the 7th inning was a game changer tonight.  With the Mets off to a 4-0 lead early it seemed like nothing could go wrong against the Bucs, especially with Santana on the bump.  Then it all started to slowly come back to the Mets, who couldn’t muster any more offense than was given to them early by Bedard.  After a pair of doubles by Andrew McCutcheon and Pedro Alvarez, cut the lead to 4-2 in the 4th inning, Santana seems to regain his form.  Then the seventh came and went, and left the Mets in a tough situation they almost escaped from.

The Mets had Kirk Nieuwenhuis on third base with one out in the eighth inning with Mike Nickeas at the plate.  Nickeas was unable to get Captain Kirk across the plate, as he struck out.  Pinch-hitter Mike Baxter was then intentionally walked, and Andres Torres eventually grounded into a fielders choice to end the inning.  The Pirates would then score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth, on a sacrifice fly.

This was a sad line up tonight for the Mets, who apparently thought they could steal one…and almost did.

Tomorrow the Mets will send R.A. Dickey to the hill against James McDonald trying to even the series.

Let’s go Mets.
