DETROIT For one night, Max Scherzer, the only 20-game winner in the majors, was coming out of the bullpen to save the day.
And he did so in a very unconventional, Todd Jones-like manner.
Ernie Harwell nicknamed the Detroit Tigers closer from the 2006 World Series team Rollercoaster Jones, and Scherzer made Jones seem like an easy ride to the final out.
Scherzer got out of a bases-loaded, nobody-out jam in the eighth inning that made him the winning pitcher in Tuesday nights 8-6 win over the Oakland As. The comeback victory forced a deciding Game 5 in the ALDS on Thursday night in Oakland.
It was surreal to be able to get an out in that situation and keep the one-run lead with the bases loaded, no outs in the eighth inning, Scherzer said. Thats the stuff you dream of.
"Maybe its not the ninth inning, but thats the stuff you dream about pitching bases loaded, eighth inning, no outs. And I was able to do it.
Scherzer came in for starter Doug Fister in the seventh inning...

There are certain plays in a game or series that fans, analysts, players and managers may look back on and determine that right there was the turning point for their team. It could be a single play, a move the manager made or a sequence of events leading up to the culmination.
Last night during the Tigers’ do-0r-die Game 4 against the Oakland A’s you may be able to identify a...
In what may have been one of the most exciting sequences in Comerica Park’s relatively brief history, Max Scherzer managed to wiggle out of a bases-loaded, no-out situation Tuesday, preserving the Tigers’ Game 4 lead.
Scherzer walked the leadoff man in the eighth, then allowed a double to Yoenis Cespedes. He then intentionally walked Seth Smith to load the bases. But strikeouts...
The Detroit Tigers are facing elimination on Tuesday in Game 4 of the ALDS against the Oakland Athletics, but despite the importance of this matchup, manager Jim Leyland has opted not to pitch Game 1 winner Max Scherzer.
Instead, Doug Fister has taken the mound with the Tigers’ season on the line.
His last outing against the Athletics at Comerica Park was in August, when he gave...
Two elite pitchers may be traded this offseason. Rays pitcher David Price is expecting to be traded, according to MLB Injury News’ Blaine Blontz, but could another ace be dealt as well? It sure looks like it.
There is a “very real chance” that the Detroit Tigers trade Max Scherzer, according to CBS Sports’ Danny Knobler. He lists the Washington Nationals, Texas Rangers, St...

Baseball's winter trade market will feature a Cy Young winner.
Or two Cy Young winners.
The Rays will almost certainly trade David Price. But there's also a very real chance that the Tigers trade Max Scherzer according to sources.
Scherzer hasn't won a Cy Young yet but he's the heavy favorite to win the award in the American League this year after going 21-3 with...
Max Scherzer escaped a major jam in relief and the Detroit Tigers -- helped by two fans who reached out to try to reel in Victor Martinez's disputed home run -- rallied past the Oakland Athletics 8-6 on Tuesday to force a decisive fifth game in their AL division series.

DETROIT (AP) - On a night of desperation, dispute and finally, delirium, Max Scherzer and the Detroit Tigers kept their season alive by the slimmest of margins.
After jumping out to an early 1-0 series lead on Friday behind a strong effort by Max Scherzer, the Detroit Tigers would falter heading into the weekend, dropping both Games 2 and 3 to the Oakland Athletics.
Facing elimination at the start of Tuesday’s match-up in Detroit, the Tigers mustered up the firepower to even the series and force a Game 5, outlasting the Athletics by a...
Justin Verlander is again standing between the Oakland Athletics and the AL championship series.
But only after Max Scherzer, the man who supplanted Verlander as Detroit's top starter this year, kept the Tigers' season alive with a relief outing to remember.

Clay Bucholz takes the ball tonight and he'll look to put the final nail in Tampa Bay's coffin and clinch a sweep for Boston. Clay Bucholz has been doing a lot of things right when he hasn't been injured and I maintain that he could have been going win for win with Max Scherzer of the Detroit...
