Can I just say that Scott Proctor’s entrance into any baseball game for the Atlanta Braves gives me instant indigestion? I am starting to wonder if Fredi Gonzalez or Frank Wren is being black-mailed by his continued presence with the team. Every time he steps foot on the mound, he puts runners on base and tries to get out of jams. Sometimes it works. Many times it doesn’t.
He was terrible in 2010. When the Braves brought him up to the big leagues in September, he was horrible. How did the Braves repay him? Signed him to a one year deal worth $750K. They released him and resigned him to a minor league contract. The sad thing is that when the Braves resigned him in November, he had the 3rd highest salary of any player in the Atlanta Braves’ bullpen. Scott Linebrink and Peter Moylan are paid more.
I admit that Proctor is struggling right now, specifically. The Braves have won 9 of 11 games. The two losses are directly attributed to Proctor. He has given up two game-winning homeruns in the last 6 games.
The thing with Proctor is that he has a knack for pitching into trouble. He has a 4.76 BB/9 and a 6.88 H/9 this year. His WHIP sits at 1.29, which isn’t terrible. The problem is that he is not able to strike out many hitters. He has 12 Ks to 11 BBs this year. Proctor also has 53.1% fly ball percentage this year. Here is what is striking, though: 11.5% of his fly balls given up have gone for home runs.
All this is to say, that Proctor needs to go. I don’t understand how he gets the call over Cory Gearrin or George Sherrill for that matter.
The Philadelphia Phillies like him, though.
