Scouts are well aware White Sox starter Jake Peavy will pitch Thursday in what appears more than likely as a showcase outing against the Tigers who beat them 6-2 Tuesday night. And some of those evaluators for pitching-thirsty teams likely will stay through the weekend thanks to a sudden development. Reliever Jesse Crain whom manager Robin Ventura wanted to make at least one minor league rehabilitation appearance could rejoin the Sox on Sunday — three days before the July 31 non-waiver trading deadline. When asked Tuesday night why he no longer would require a stint in the minors for his rehabbing right shoulder Crain smiled "I don't know. I'm sure you know of a reason." The Red Sox Braves Dodgers Reds and Diamondbacks —all exploring relief help — are expected to have scouts at U.S. Cellular Field throughout the weekend to watch Peavy and now Crain who said his shoulder felt fine during a 33-pitch bullpen session. The Sox are listening to proposals. They turned down a deal involving pitcher Carlos Martinez the Cardinals third-highest rated prospect for shortstop Alexei Ramirez according to a scouting source. Martinez 21 is 4-2 with a 2.05 ERA in 11 starts at Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis. Martinez who possesses a fastball in the high-90s mph range has struck out 44 hitters in 52 innings. With Shelby Miller receiving extra rest and Chris Carpenter delaying his comeback the Cardinals are examining their starting pitching options and those include Peavy. Moreover the Red Sox and Diamondbacks are expected to have two scouts at Thursday's game to watch Peavy. Pitching coach Don Cooper downplayed the significance of Crain possibly returning by Sunday without a rehab stint. "He threw a simulated game in Boston last year (before returning)" Cooper said of Crain who appeared in only four spring training games because of an adductor strain.
