The Red Sox have shipped Marco Scutaro to Colorado
The Boston Red Sox have completed a trade that sent shortstop Marco Scutaro to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for right-handed pitcher Clayton Mortensen. Mortensen has been a bit of a journeyman in his 4 years in the majors, as he was originally drafted by St. Louis, who sent him to Oakland as part of their deal for Matt Holliday. Oakland subsequently shipped him to Colorado for a minor-leaguer, and now Mortensen lands in Boston. Last year, Mortensen went 2-4 with a 3.86 ERA in his 16 appearances, 6 of which were starts.
Scutaro is known as a defensive specialist and filled a need the Red Sox had at shortstop, but Boston’s focus has now turned to freeing up cash to pursue a big-named free agent , such as Roy Osawlt. That, in addition to the fact that the Sox have several viable options at shortstop, including Mike Aviles, Nick Punto and young defensive phenom Jose Iglesias already on the depth chart, left Scutaro as the odd-ma...

Scutaro played in 113 games for the Red Sox last year and he was 118 of 395 (.299 avg, .781 OPS) with 59 runs scored, 7 homers, 54 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. He has now played in 1,103 games in his first 10 years in the majors and he...
Marco Scutaro traded to Colorado Rockies
Yesterday, the Boston Red Sox traded Marco Scutaro to the Colorado Rockies for Clayton Mortensen. If you haven’t heard of Mortensen, don’t feel bad. He likely won’t be a part of the Red Sox plans this year anyway. For many in the industry this was a curious move for the Red Sox, but the deal will make a lot more sense when we find out what they are doing to follow...
Must Be New Math
One thing I find a little puzzling is talk that trading Marco Scutaro opened up room on the Red Sox payroll. Clearly it did, but not that much. Baseball Reference says Scutaro made $5.5 million in 2011 -- nothing to sneeze at, but not a bank-breaker by baseball standards.By comparison, Bobby Jenks, who appeared in 19 games, made $6 million in 2011.People speculating on this windfall...

Rockies Move On Without Braves’ Prado
The rumored trade that was the most exciting happening of the offseason for the Atlanta Braves was finally put down on Saturday night. The Colorado Rockies acquired Marco Scutaro from the Boston Red Sox for a player who isn’t going to be the next Roy Halladay. At best, the Red Sox dumped the salary of Scutaro to fill another hole on their team, with the addition of Cody Ross...
AL East Notes: Scutaro, Yankees, Ibanez, Orioles
Here's a look at some items out of the AL East..
Rob Neyer of SB Nation doesn't understand the logic behind the Red Sox trading Marco Scutaro. While the deal saves the club $6MM, it also means a downgrade at the shortstop position. The club is reportedly comfortable with a Nick Punto/Mike Aviles platoon.
In a perfect world, Boston would add both Roy Oswalt and...

When the Red Sox traded shortstop Marco Scutaro to the Rockies last week, the expectation was that they would use the money saved to improve their thin rotation.
Red Sox Should Use Newfound Financial Flexibility to Pursue Player Like Cody Ross for Needed Outfield Depth
The Red Sox are positioned for another major acquisition. By trading shortstop Marco Scutaro to Colorado, the Red Sox shed $6 million off the books, a move that may make once again make them buyers in the free-agent market. With the financial flexibility, it's plausible that general manager Ben Cherington will increase his pursuit of pitcher Roy Oswalt. The veteran is reportedly...
