BEST OF MAXIM
The San Diego Padres have placed third baseman Chase Headley on waivers, according to CBS' Jon Heyman. Placing players on waivers is standard procedure and deals don't often happen, but this may be different.
The Padres are 16.5 games out of first place in the NL West and Headley won't negotiate a deal during the season. Headley told this to Corey Brock of MLB.com...
The AZL Padres, TinCaps, Storm, and the Missions all won by 1 run while Tucson won by just 2 runs. The TinCaps and the Storm enjoyed walk-off victories. Eugene was the lone team to lose in the organization tonight, and they only lost by 1 run.

Pitching Player of the Day: Anthony Bass

The T-Pads offense continued to click while the Missions were treated to an impressive pitching performance by Matt Wisler. Both the Storm and the TinCaps won close games. The short season teams, Eugene and the AZL Padres, were the only teams to lose on the farm tonight.

…Out of Center Field
Apologies to Elmore Leonard, whose death yesterday at the age of 87 inspired this post, if you can believe it.*
When Cameron Maybin went down with his knee injury, Bud Black had, to play center field, his choice of two fourth outfielders — Will Venable & Chris Denorfia. And a utility player who was seen by most as just an emergency outfielder, Alexi...
Ian Kennedy was lights out for the Padres yesterday as they were able to take the final game of the series against the Pirates. The Padres didn’t give him very much breathing room though as the offense again struggled to put runs on the board. This time they only managed two, but Kennedy was able to remain dominant. The Padres left seven men on base and went one for nine with runners...

Half the farm had the day off, but the teams that did play all had bright spots. The T-Pads had an all around dominating game while the Emeralds won a close 1 run game. Even though the TinCaps lost 12-5, their 1st baseman, Diego Goris, had a home run and 3 RBI.

Erik Daniel Drost Many of my Buy or Sell posts have been about younger players. I think it’s time to give a couple of veterans some love. Chris Denorfia has earned more playing time in San Diego, while Michael Bourn and the Tribe are struggling in the month of August. Am I buying or selling? Chris Denorfia | SD It can be difficult to find good production from the waiver...
Ian Kennedy pitched seven strong innings, combining with two relievers on a four-hitter, and Yonder Alonso drove in two runs as the San Diego Padres beat the NL Central-leading Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 Wednesday to avoid a three-game sweep.
Kennedy, who played at Southern Cal, outpitched Gerrit Cole, who pitched at UCLA before the Pirates made him the first pick overall in the June...
On a positive note, the Padres out hit the Pirates yesterday six hits to five. Unfortunately, that’s the only positive I could find offensively, because overall, the team struggled to put the ball in play, striking out 17 times last night. Andrew Cashner had another solid outing for the Friars wasted, allowing three runs, one earned, and walking only two batters over seven innings...
The Pirates were grounded Wednesday. They found themselves lift-less against Ian Kennedy a fly-ball pitcher.
At least for a day Kennedy bucked that reputation. His fourth start at home at Petco Park was his best. He struck out eight in seven shutout innings to steer the Padres to a 2-1 victory over Pittsburgh.
It was the first time in 25 starts this season that Kennedy did not...
Pirates (73-51) at Padres (56-69)
10:10 PM–Petco Park, San Diego
The Pirates look for two in a row and a road series win as they try to cling to their NL Central lead this evening. The trip got off to a great start last night, but another victory would mark back to back wins for the first time in a while and would certainly be refreshing to see.
Ah me favorite series o’ t’ year. T’ time I get t’ speak like a man o’ t’ sea, t’ dreaded Pirate. After winnin’ two straight games against t’ Mets, T’ Friars dropped t’ first two, and t’ series hostin’ t’ Pirates at Petco Park. Though this be normally not a good thin’, thar be plenty o’ positives t’ take from this series. Here be me five.”
Just for the heck of it, here are three second-half split lines for your review.
