Game Thoughts The Indians were able to complete a much needed three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday with a strong pitching performance from Justin Masterson and a great relief effort by Rich Hill, Cody Allen, and Chris Perez picking up his 20th save on the season. Masterson was effectively wild in this game working his way through 6 2/3 innings despite walking five batters and having shaky control most of the night. Fortunately, the offense did just enough get Masterson his 14th win on the season. The top of the order was particularly effective with Michael Bourn getting on base four times and Nick Swisher providing the big blow with a two-run homer in the third inning. That home run was Swisher’s fourth in his last ten days and his 15th on the season. Maybe the shoulder is starting to feel better? With the sweep the Indians gain some retribution for their series loss against the Angels earlier in the month and end their road trip with a 6-3 record. The Indians will...

Second Thoughts Game #126: Indians 4, Angels 1

Another Glimpse into the Future It became crystal clear on Tuesday night that the Indians are being cautious to a fault with star pitching prospect Danny Salazar, who continues to inch ever-closer to his predetermined innings limit as he is now in the home stretch of his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Despite giving up a leadoff homer to J.B. Shuck in the first inning...

Should the Indians “Chase” Headley?

It is widely known that Indians GM Chris Antonetti is out seeking ways to improve his club now and in the future. The whispers are that the Tribe has made several claims on players who other teams have put out as available since the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline. The waivers are revocable, which means that should the Indians claim someone, the other team has the right to pull...

Nine Innings: On a big win and cleanup bats

1) Tuesday nights 4-1 win in Anaheim perfectly illustrates why this season is not over. This Indians team wont let it end. Tuesday they trailed most of the game, tied it on a seventh-inning home run by Carlos Santana and somehow escaped a bases-loaded-and-nobody-out situation in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. In the 14th, Drew Stubbs won it with a home...

On-Deck with the Captains: 8/14/13 - 8/20/13

The Lake County Captains continued their recent success with a handful of W’s last week, complete with one of their own being deemed Cleveland Indians Minor League Player of the Week. As the playoffs loom closer, the team now must press to produce offensively, which has been its Achilles all year. Smooth Sailing Jeremy Lucas, C5 G, .340 BA, .443 OBP, 1.133 OPS, 6-for-18, 4 R, 4...

Indians 3, Angels 1: Tribe Sweeps their way back home

Every single time you try to bury this Indians team, they come back with a vengeance. They are like Frank Costanza cooking at Jewish singles night for the first time since the Korean War:  ”like a Phoenix….rising from Arizona!” (I know that makes no sense, but anything Frank said was funny). The weekend series in Oakland, one of the teams the Indians are directly chasing,...

Stubbs hits 2-run homer in 14th inning as Indians beat Angels 4-1

Rookie Danny Salazar tantalized once again Tuesday night but he missed the real drama with another early exit. Salazar struck out seven to give him 29 strikeouts in his first 23 big-league innings but he was long gone by the time the Indians beat the Angels 4-1 in 14 innings as Drew Stubbs hit a two-run homer to break a 1-1 tie. The Indians are an AL-best 9-2 in extra innings this...

August 2013 Prospect Report

The Minor League seasons are wrapping up, with all but the Scrappers done with regular season play by September 2nd (the Scrappers end two days later). At this point, most players who have a Major League future have already been covered, but there are still a few players in need of recognition. These are the final ten players to be featured this year before we start over again in...
