The Rays entered this series 3 1/2 games back behind the AL East leading New York Yankees. With a chance to sweep the series and climb to a 1/2 game behind New York, Tampa Bay found themselves gaining just one game in the division after losing the final game of the series. The Rays found themselves down 4-3 in the sixth inning until Luke Scott hit his 13th home run on the year to tie the game. In the top of the seventh, the Yankees would regain the lead after Elliot Johnson could not complete the throw him off a Derek Jeter grounder that allowed the Yankees to get two runs. The Rays would show fight in the bottom of the seventh. With Desmond Jennings on second base and Evan Longoria on first, Matt Joyce would come to the plate with two outs but would pop up to Jeter to end the threat. However, the Rays victories on Monday and Tuesday allowed them to gain at least a game in the division standings and currently sit 1 1/2 games back for the final wild card spot.
