Are you dying (not literally) to know more about the San Francisco Giants number one draft pick? Marc Raimondi of the New York Post recently wrote an article about the Giants drafting shortstop Joe Panik. Raimondi says Panik was just another smallish middle infielder with potential at the plate after high school. Panik went on to St. John’s and added 20 pounds of muscle, improved his speed and agility.
Raimondi was kind enough to share more of his insights with SF Giants Rumors.
“I think the Giants drafted him in a fine spot. A few pundits thought he went too high, but the Giants fell in love with his makeup — he’s incredibly hard working and cerebral with a 3.8 GPA as a finance major at St. John’s. The best comparison might really be Rich Aurilia (who also went to St. John’s), a good hitting shortstop who isn’t super athletic or a great fielder, but works very hard.”
