One of the main goals of the 2011 Mets was to make sure that Francisco Rodriguez’ $17.5 million option did not vest for 2012. The option would kick in once Rodriguez finished 55 games. Manager Terry Collins utilized Rodriguez like any other manager would use his closer and by the All-Star break, Rodriguez had finished 34 games and was well on his way to having his 2012 salary guaranteed. But GM Sandy Alderson was able to trade Rodriguez to the Brewers for two warm bodies, thus saving his owners at least $14 million, as K-Rod had a $3.5 million buyout. The Mets used Jason Isringhausen as their closer until he reached his 300th lifetime save and then they turned over the position to Bobby Parnell, who proved not ready for prime time. Manny Acosta also got some chances down the stretch but it became clear that the Mets would have to look outside the organization for their 2012 closer. Alderson stated that he wanted to bring in two guys with closing experience, thus giving the ...

Who Is The Mets Shortstop Of The Future?

I received an email over the weekend from a reader who wanted to know if either Wilmer Flores or Ruben Tejada were the longterm solution at shortstop for the Mets. Is Wilmer Flores or Ruben Tejada the Mets shortstop of the future? No – Neither Flores or Tejada will be the longterm solution at shortstop. To begin, nobody believes Flores will remain at shortstop for too much...

Who is Mets 20-yr-old SS prospect Aderlin Rodriguez?

Last week, MinorLeagueBall.com’s John Sickels published his top 20 prospect list for the Mets. However, he did not include 20-year-old SS-3B prospect Aderlin Rodriguez. Rodriguez hit just .221 with a .265 OBP in 131 games for Low-A Savannah last year. However, he also had 23 doubles, 17 home runs, 2 triples and 78 RBI. In a post for Scouting the Sally at the end of last season...

Analyzing the Prospects of the Upcoming Season

Don’t worry. Your eyes are not deceiving you. It is I…the czar of the Daily Stache, making my triumphant return to talk about all things Metropolitans. First of all, AFMU.com is the worst to host a website. Don’t make the same mistake we did. Anyway, back to new business. The Mets don’t have much to lose this year…except games. We all expect plenty of...

Reaping What You Sow: Milwaukee Brewers Top 10 Prospects

Clearing out the farm system isn’t usually advised, but the Brewers were in a unique position. Having Prince Fielder for one more season and needing at least two starters, the Brewers cleaned out their top prospect cupboard and added Alcides Escobar. Jake Odirizzi, Brett Lawrie, Jeremy Jeffress, Lorenzo Cain, and Escobar got the Brewers Zack Greinke, Shaun Marcum, and a division...

Top Ten Mets Headlines Of 2011

Good afternoon all. Just got back from Ohio and visiting with my family over Christmas. There was time to reflect on the year, which, of course, includes the Mets’ third straight losing season. The year was the first under the Sandy Alderson-Terry Collins regime, which was supposed to represent a change in the franchise’s culture and downward spiral. It did not. There were seemingly...

MMO Exclusive Interview: Mets Prospect Scott Moviel, RHP

I got a chance to talk with Mets right-hander Scott Moviel just after Christmas and he was nice enough to bring us up-to-date as far as his progress in 2011. Before last season Scott was battling knee troubles which can be problematic for a pitcher who stands 6’11″. Now healthy once again, he provides us with some very interesting insights on the challenges he is taking...

METS SHOULD DO LIKE THE NETS AND REACH OUT TO THE HOUSE OF MOUSE

The soon to be Brooklyn Nets have made a great move towards there relocation to Brooklyn and the Barclays Center by reaching out to the Walt Disney Co. to work with the team on training game day personnel on treating the fan/customer the correct way. I have been screaming for the NY Mets to do this for years. If you have ever been to Disneyland or Disney World you know that the folks...

Nats 'the favorite' to get Fielder

HBT: Washington might not be Prince Fielder‘s first choice, but the Nationals “have emerged as the favorite” to sign the free agent first baseman.

Where Will Prince Fielder Land?

Happy New Year Everyone!  With not a whole lot to talk about today, I’ve got something to talk about.  Where will Prince Fielder land? It’s really surprising to see that Fielder has not signed yet.  We expected Fielder to ramp up his negotiations after Albert Pujols signed with the Los Angeles Angels. However, it appears that he has slowed down in his pursuit of...

Report: Nationals leading chase for Prince Fielder

It's nearing crunch time for Fielder

HBT: It’s anyone’s guess as to where Prince Fielder will end up. But it’s January 2012, and probably closing in on crunch time for super-agent Scott Boras and his big fish client.

Third place possible for Mariners, but contention at least year away

Overview With or without Prince Fielder, the American League West has gotten a lot tougher for the Mariners. Armed with new local television...
