Rumor has it that the Boston Red Sox are currently in discussions with free agent first basemen Adam LaRoche. In light of the state of the franchise, the other teams in the AL East, and the other additions the Sox made this winter, this is a bad idea. To figure out why this is a bad move, we need to start at last season. Boston lost more than 90 games this season for the first time in recent memory. They finished last in the AL East and in the process dumped veteran stars Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, and Josh Beckett. They also learned that they have significant holes in their rotation as Clay Buchholz and Jon Lester had terrible seasons. At the start of the winter, they had to fill all those voids (starters, left fielder, first basemen) while also dealing with holes at shortstop and potentially behind the plate. Further, star centerfielder Jacoby Ellsbury is only a year away from free agency and is likely to leave. Why is he likely to leave? Because the Sox have, supposedly, lea...

The Boston Red Sox are pursuing free-agent first baseman Adam LaRoche, according to a report from SB Nation Boston's Jen Royle. LaRoche is seeking a three-year deal, despite having multiple two-year offers on the table. One of those offers is from the Washington Nationals, the team which LaRoche spent the previous two seasons. The 33-year-old batted .271 with 33 home runs...

Your Morning Dump... Where Bard has a lot to prove

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. "I haven't really thought about how it affects my situation," said Bard of the Hanrahan acquisition. "I know I have a lot to prove coming into spring training, and I'm getting ready...

Boston Red Sox continue confusing offseason

Today the Boston Red Sox finalized their one-year, $9.5M deal with shortstop Stephen Drew.  Forgetting for a moment the painful memories dredged up by having a Drew on the roster, this is yet another strange acquisition.  While Drew has some lingering upside, he’s clearly not the high-end player many thought he’d become.  Nor is $9.5M chump change.  As they did with Shane...

According to multiple baseball sources, at least one team has been in communication with Mike Napoli's representatives regarding the free agent infielder's status since...

Red Sox Rumors: What’s Next for Andrew Bailey?

The Boston Red Sox officially announced their acquisition of Joel Hanrahan yesterday and named the veteran as their closer entering the 2013 season. Boston acquired Andrew Bailey last offseason, a player they expected to be their closer of the future. It’s now unclear what the future holds for Bailey, who will enter spring as the Red Sox setup man to Hanrahan, reports Jon...

Mike Napoli Remains Better Fit for Red Sox, As Signing Adam LaRoche Would Be Inconsistent With Offseason Strategy

The Red Sox might be doing their homework in case their reported deal with Mike Napoli falls through. It doesn’t mean they’re going to get the same grade. Reports are starting to surface that the Sox are talking with free-agent first baseman Adam LaRoche, just in case they’re unable to finalize the deal with Napoli that was first reported more than three weeks ago. But while...

Daniel Bard Says He Has ‘A Lot to Prove,’ Isn’t Thinking About Role With Red Sox After Joel Hanrahan Trade

Buried in the news that the Red Sox had acquired yet another closer in dealing for Pittsburgh’s Joel Hanrahan was the knowledge that a one-time closer-in-training still waits in the Boston system. That’s because Daniel Bard, who was once considered likely to take the ninth-inning reins from Jonathan Papelbon, is far from major league dominance after a mess of a season. Bard was...

Sox Looking at Adam LaRoche

According to numerous reports, the Sox have set their sights on Adam LaRoche, the Nationals first baseman and "by far the most desirable free agent first baseman remaining," according to Adam Kilgore in the Washington Post.LaRoche is 33 and coming off one of the best years of his career.  This seems to hinge on the still-not-done Mike Napoli deal. Like so many things, it seems.

MLB Rumors: Boston Red Sox Acquire Joel Hanrahan To Replace Andrew Bailey As Closer

It is a deal that was first reported last weekend, but has now been consummated and made official on Wednesday. The Red Sox have made no secret that Hanrahan will serve as the team’s closer, and that there will be no competition between he and...

Red Sox Have Have Improved Bullpen for 2013, But Is it Best in American League? (Video)

The Red Sox certainly improved their bullpen this winter. In addition to guys with closing experience like Andrew Bailey and Alfredo Aceves, the team added more live arms in Joel Hanrahan and Koji Uehara. That gives Boston one of the deepest bullpens in the American League, but is it the best? The Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham think so, but his colleague Nick Cafardo disagrees,...

Red Sox Make Drew Deal Official

Red Sox quietly have fortified bullpen

The Baltimore Orioles rode a historic performance from their bullpen to the postseason. Let's just say the Boston Red Sox were inspired. While much attention has been paid to the various free agent signings throughout the lineup (Shane Victorino, Stephen Drew, Jonny Gomes, et al.) and in the rotation (Ryan Dempster), the Red Sox also have quietly bolstered one of the few...

Via Paul Lukas of UniWatch/ESPN.com, a sneak peak in the image above of the new red white and blue cap above, right, contrasted with the really ugly old ones. WFY chimed...
