GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) -- Kevin Slowey gave up four runs over four innings in another so-so effort to earn the final spot in Cleveland's rotation, and the Indians' lost 5-3 to the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday. Brett Pill hit a three-run homer in the fourth off Slowey. The shot far over the left-field fence sent a group of fans scrambling in the sunbaked sand outside Goodyear Ballpark for a Cactus League souvenir. Shelley Duncan hit a two-run homer and leads the Indians with four homers and 12 RBIs. Giants starter Eric Surkamp allowed the homer among four hits over five innings, striking out three. Indians reliever Rafael Perez fanned two over one perfect inning in his spring debut. He had been nursing a sore left shoulder.

Mark Shapiro Discusses Future of Choo, Asdrubal and the Dolans

In an interview with 850AM WKNR, Cleveland Indians team president Mark Shapiro discussed the future of several key individuals within the organization, including chairman and chief executive officer Paul Dolan. With a bevy of players signing one-year, arbitration-avoiding contracts, the Indians have recently been viewed as a team ripe for the having due to perceived financial flexibility...

Brantley’s Strain Conjures Up The Sizemore Signing Pain

The elephant in the room has reared its ugly head in Wahooland once again. During yesterday’s 4-3 Spring Training win over the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Tribe’s slated opening day center fielder, Michael Brantley, left the game with what has been described as “mild tightness in his right hamstring.” Manager Manny Acta said taking Brantley out of the game was “a precaution...

Player Profile: Josh Tomlin and the Other Shoe

On Monday I wrote that perhaps we shouldn’t put too much stock in Michael Brantley’s historical performance. My argument was mostly that he’s a young player who’s still developing his offensive skills, and with young guys, we should be a bit patient before making grand pronouncements of failure. Well, Josh Tomlin is kind of young.  And he’s actually been pretty successful...

Spring Training: Rotation Competition

With Kevin Slowey starting today, the battle for the fifth starting pitcher should be a little clearer. Justin Masterson, Ubaldo Jimenez, Josh Tomlin and Derek Lowe hold the first four spots in the 2012 Cleveland Indians starting rotation while Jeanmar Gomez, David Huff, Zach McAllister and Slowey compete for the last spot. So far, Jeanmar Gomez appears to be the most ready...
THEY CALL IT 'MOBY DICK'

Minor league team's 3-pound fish sandwich

The Lake County Captains, the Class A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, are set to debut the above monstrosity at home games this upcoming season. The fish sandwich, named the Moby Dick (wait, Moby Dick was a mammal — oh well), is described as follows in a press release on the team’s site (via Big [...]

2012 season preview: Cleveland Indians

The Indians started off the 2011 season like a house of fire, and were quickly in control of the AL Central. As the season went on, their tight grasp of the division lead started fading and fading, until they completely lost it, and ended up finishing under .500 for the season in second place. There was a lot to build on, but there were still plenty of holes on this Tribe team that...

Indians Claim RHP Rick Vandenhurk off of Waivers

The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has claimed RHP Rick Vandenhurk off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays.  He will report to Major League camp in the coming days. To make room on the Tribe’s 40-man roster LHP Kelvin De La Cruz has been designated for assignment. VandenHurk, 26, has pitched in parts of five major league seasons with Florida (2007-10) and Baltimore...

Indians are confident contenders

Once the swelling subsided and the bumps and bruises healed, the Cleveland Indians reflected on their injury-scarred 2011 season with surprising affection. Sure, it was cruel and painful. Disappointing for the team and its fans? Better believe it. But in the end, it was worth it. The spectacular start and the improbable come-from-behind wins that were overshadowed by a disastrous...

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) -- Ubaldo Jimenez allowed a run in four innings and the Cleveland Indians beat the San Diego Padres 9-4 on Thursday. Jimenez, who entered with a 9.31 ERA, struck out four and walked one. Travis Hafner hit a solo homer and had an RBI groundout for Cleveland. Cory Luebke allowed a run, four hits and struck out six in five innings for San Diego. Chase Headley...

Uni Watch Cleveland Indians Re-Name Game

There are few conversations that are more potentially productive than conversations about the idea of the Cleveland Indians finally ditching the disgusting, embarrassing, and profoundly damning red sambo, Chief Wahoo, and just such a conversation is taking place at one of the finest sites (with one of the finest commenting communities) on the web, Uni Watch. Ki Yi Waugh Woop...

Forbes: Cleveland Indians’ Value Increases 16 Percent

Though the Cleveland Indians have long disagreed with how Forbes Magazine evaluates the value of sports franchises, their latest report has the team currently worth $410 million. This amount represents a 16 percent increase year-over-year and places them 26th among all Major League Baseball teams. Forbes reports that, among these numbers, the Indians presently earn $178 million in...

The Ballad of Buster Posey, Played By Carlos Santana

If there is one thing I learned from spending the week talking to media members at Spring Training, it’s that Buster Posey hates answering questions about his ankle. He shut us up a little bit by getting his first hit of the spring, an opposite-field home run off Tony Sipp in last Wednesday’s exhibition game against the Indians. Still, this type of injury and required rehab...
