Jonathan Papelbon has signed with the Philadelphia Phillies so for now he is mostly out of our lives. There was one interesting story though that has come out since he left Boston.
Peter Gammons tweeted a story about the offseason the Yankees landed Javier Vazquez. Apparently before the Yankees made the deal for him with the Braves, the Red Sox offered Papelbon up for him but they rejected the trade.
Damn.
That deal would have immediately made the Red Sox worse and the Yankees better just because they wouldn’t have had to use Vazquez. More importantly, the Yankees would probably still have Arodys Vizcaino in their system.
That is clearly the big loss of that trade, although they did get Boone Logan so it wasn’t a total loss. However, Vizcaino is quite the prospect and even with all of the Yankees near major league ready pitching talent, he would be right up there among the best of them.
It does show though that Brian Cashman isn’t the only one who wanted Vazqu...
