The Philadelphia Phillies have found their setup man, reaching agreement with free-agent right-hander Mike Adams on a two-year, $12 million contract, according to a major-league source. The deal, which includes a vesting option, is pending a physical, the source said. Adams, 34, underwent surgery in October for thoracic outlet syndrome, which is caused by a rib pushing down on a nerve and causing numbness. The injury was believed to be responsible for Adams' struggles in September with the Texas Rangers. He has been an elite setup man the past five seasons, posting a 1.98 ERA in 295 innings for San Diego and Texas. With the Phillies, Adams will set up for closer Jonathan Papelbon, giving the team a potentially dominant late-inning combination. Adams is the Phillies' third major acquisition of the off-season, joining his former Rangers teammate, third baseman Michael Young, and center fielder Ben Revere, whom the team acquired in a trade from Minnesota. The Phillies continues to look for a corner outfielder, with free agent Cody Ross and the Chicago Cubs' Alfonso Soriano among the reported possibilities. Adams is represented by ACES, the agency headed by Seth and Sam Levinson. The deal first was reported by KRISTV.com in Adams' hometown of Corpus Christi, Texas.
