The Texas Rangers suffered a disappointing loss on Opening Night, but they appear to be on the verge of a coup with far greater implications. A contract extension for shortstop Elvis Andrus. The Rangers are close to signing Andrus to a new eight-year deal, according to major league sources. The deal, believed to be for $120 million, would replace the final two years of Andrus' current contract and add six more, giving the Rangers control of the two-time All-Star through 2020. Andrus, 24, is under contract for $11.275 million the next two seasons. A six-year extension would add $108.725 million, putting him above Toronto shortstop Jose Reyes, who signed a six-year, $106 million free-agent contract with the Marlins after the 2011 season. He was traded to Toronto this offseason. Reyes is a superior offensive player -- his career OPS is .782 to Andrus' .695. Andrus, however, improved his OPS from .643 to .708 to .727 from 2010 to '12. He also has been durable, averaging 150 games in his four full seasons, and one of the top defensive shortstop in the majors. Andrus, if he signed an eight-year contract, would be eligible for free agency at 32. A deal also would increase the chances of the Rangers' top prospect, Jurickson Profar, moving from shortstop to second, with second baseman Ian Kinsler eventually moving to first.
