Found August 08, 2012 on Fenway West:
It seems like today's game against the Rangers was a microcosm for the 2012 season. The pitching puts us at a big disadvantage, and the offense falls just short of making up for it. Both teams came out swinging today but the Rangers finished victorious. Beckett went five innings, allowing 8 runs (2 in the sixth without recording an out.) Mortensen let up one run in the seventh and the Red Sox came into the bottom of the seventh losing 9-5 and scored 4 runs to tie it up 9-9. Unfortunately Mortensen let up one more run in the ninth, and the Red Sox bats went cold in the bottom half. Beckett did not look good on the mound, letting up three homers (Hamilton, Moreland, Soto). It's not often a day with a 14.4 ERA doesn't get you the loss but Beckett passed the buck off to Mortensen. It's a shame such a good offensive day went to waste. Gonzalez was 3 for 5 with 3 RBI's and Middlebrooks hit a three run homer of Roy Oswalt and drew two walks. Unfortunately, they also le...

Ryan Dempster Feels 'Awesome' to Get First Win 17 Years After Being Drafted By Rangers

Ryan Dempster has had an interesting two weeks. But when it comes to the Texas Rangers, it's been moe like two decades. It was the final week of July -- prime time for MLB teams on the trade market -- and Dempster was a hot commodity. First, he was reportedly traded to the Braves, only to supposedly enact his 10-5 rights and veto the deal. Then it was swirling rumors of an imminent...

Rangers will limit Nathan to save opportunities

No longer will the Texas Rangers turn to Joe Nathan to protect four- or five-run ninth-inning leads, even if manager Ron Washington considers them the equivalent of save situations. The Rangers think Nathan's arm is too precious to potentially foul up with extra use. The decision came in light of Nathan's recent minor health scare in which he had a bit of shoulder inflammation...

Sabermetric Spotlight: Josh Hamilton

Sabermetric Spotlight: Josh Hamilton, OF, Texas Rangers The Reason - So you may have heard of this gentleman named Josh Hamilton once or twice before in your life. His life-story is one that mimics that of Millenium Force at Cedar Point to date. In a nutshell, that also is a microcosm of his 2012 year thus far. Through the first two months he hit 21 HRs (four in one game!) and...

Yu Darvish’s Bad Command Comparables

Last night, Yu Darvish took the mound against the Red Sox, and not surprisingly, he racked up a lot of walks and strikeouts. This is a common trend for Darvish, who has ended 39.6% of opposing plate appearances with a walk, hit batter, or a strikeout. Darvish is the kind of pitcher who succeeds or fails on his own, relying less on his defense than just about any other pitcher in...

BP Unfiltered: Yu Darvish with Two Strikes by Dan Brooks

One way to look at how a pitcher attacks hitters is to look at what the pitcher throws in two-strike counts. In two-strike counts, pitchers often try to put hitters away with a breaking ball, induce weak contact with a sinker, overpower hitters with an extra-hard fastball, or throw a changeup with a bit of extra screw action. I hadn’t seen Yu Darvish pitch in quite some time,...

Dempster gets first W as a Ranger

Another game, another day of fans analyzing and bemoaning Ron Washington’s lineup.  Craig Gentry and Mike Napoli were absent from the starting lineup in favor of David Murphy and Geovany Soto.  Murphy’s swinging a hot bat right now, and Soto hasn’t had a ton of AL at bats yet, so I kind of get it.  I think most people are just wondering when Michael Young is going to get...

Rangers release catcher Yorvit Torrealba

Rangers 10, Red Sox 9

Adrian Beltre had a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the ninth inning after Texas blew a late four-run lead and the Rangers beat the Boston Red Sox 10-9 Wednesday. Josh Hamilton homered among his three hits and had four RBIs for Texas, which couldn't hold a 9-5 edge before pulling out its sixth win in eight games. Mitch Moreland, Nelson Cruz and Geovany Soto also homered for the...

Jon Lester, Ryan Dempster Enter Matchup With Wildly Different Experiences in Recent Run Support (Video)

Jon Lester and Ryan Dempster lived very different lives their last time out on the mound. Lester, on one hand, pitched great but was dealt a hard-luck loss. Dempster, on the other, got shelled but then bailed out by his teammates, earning a no-decision while the Rangers ultimately won. NESN Nation's Dan Duquette is rooting for Dempster's struggles to continue in the American...

Tigers-Rangers Preview

In a trend that began last postseason, the Texas Rangers have had little trouble beating the Detroit Tigers. They seem poised to continue that success now that Scott Feldman is suddenly pitching dominant ball. Feldman looks to win his seventh straight decision in Friday night's series opener between the AL West-leading Rangers and visiting Tigers. After a day off following...

Recap: Inconsistency continues

(Photo by Jim Rogash/Getty Images) Well, we knew the Sox were not going to sweep the Rangers as their 2-game winning streak came to an end with a 6-3 loss to the Rangers. The game remained score-less until the 6th inning when Ian Kinsler singled in David Murphy, followed by a single from Hamilton that drove in Kinsler to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead. The Rangers scored 2 again in...

Angels-Rangers Baseball's Best Rivalry Right Now?

Derek Wangler The past 2 seasons the Texas Rangers have been the AL’s representative in the World Series. The Rangers have lost both of those World Series. This offseason it seemed that the rival LA Angels were tired of watching the playoffs and decided to do something about that by throwing huge money at Albert Pujols and CJ Wilson. The Rangers countered the Angels huge moves...

Roy Oswalt needs a timeout

Roy Oswalt has a 5.82 ERA. Roy Oswalt doesn't like his role. Roy Oswalt needs to take a number and get in line. The Texas Rangers have more pressing concerns than his ego. The Rangers have lost two straight games, during which starters Derek Holland and Yu Darvish turned in alarming clunkers. With two-fifths of the Opening Day rotation lost to season-ending surgeries -- Colby...

Oswalt is still a Ranger -- and still a reliever

Roy Oswalt remains part of the Texas Rangers' pitching staff. On Monday, a day after he said was through after 30 pitches in two perfect innings, the club said its position on Oswalt is the same. The team brass is aware he has a very strong desire to be a starter, even if that is somewhere other than Texas, but it has no plans right now to change his role. Rangers officials...
