After it was made official today at the Jays spring training camp that Marc Rzepczynski was no longer in consideration for the final spot in the 2011 starting rotation, Jesse Litsch took the matter into his own hands, making a statement in the two-man race between him and Jo-Jo Reyes by putting on a dominating performance against the Minnesota Twins.
The Jays won the game 3-0, but the real story was Litsch’s latest performance. Over 5 and 1/3 innings, Litsch allowed just 3 hits over the outing, walked none, and struck out 7 batters. He retired 10 batters in a row at one point, and threw just 64 pitches. I’ve mentioned before that Litsch had to be perfect each time out to have success, and after struggling his last time out, he was basically perfect today, locating all of this pitches and only really allowing a couple of hard-hit balls in the air.
