Say what you will about his speed on the basepaths, but Rajai Davis is opening eyes at this year’s Blue Jays camp with his power bat. The speedy centre-fielder hasn’t stolen a single base this spring yet – but with his 4th spring home run today off Ryan Madson, and a OPS of 1.058, he really hasn’t hit like a lead-off hitter. Why steal second base when you can just get there with a double? For a player who has only hit 12 home runs in his entire career to date, you could say the power has been a big of a revelation. Hitting coach Dwayne Murphy is clearly working some sort of magic here – with a slight adjustment, he turned Jose Bautista into a 50+ home run slugger. If Davis can take in some of that magic and slug the ball like this in the regular season, you might even see him match his career total in ’11. For now, I think I’ll keep my expectations tempered.
