Entering the 2013 season, the St. Louis Cardinals had obvious question marks up the middle. So many question marks in fact, that they pulled an old Tony La Russa trick and converted Matt Carpenter, a natural third baseman, into a second baseman to create a platoon situation with Daniel Descalso.
Carpenter has pulled his weight and held his own at second, but with David Freese struggling over at third base, he has been asked to play more at the his natural hot corner position. This leaves Descalso as the second baseman and unfortunately, that has been a problem for the Cardinals because his production has been so putrid offensively that the Cardinals cannot afford to keep him around much longer.
In fact, Descalso's days in St. Louis should be numbered.
Descalso is hitting just .169 on the season with no home runs and five RBIs in 20 games played and 62 at bats. His .430 OPS is absolutely atrocious and is just .30 better than starter Adam Wainwright's. Descalso only has ...

After yesterday's outing in which he gave up two walks without retiring a batter, the Cardinals had seen enough of Mitchell Boggs and demoted him to AAA to sort out his issues.
To take his place, the Cardinals called up another one of their flame throwing prospects, Carlos Martinez, from AA Springfield. Martinez, who had the start of his season delayed by visa issues, has...
The St. Louis Cardinals have run out of patience with Mitchell Boggs, demoting the reliever saddled with a 12.66 ERA to Triple-A Memphis on Friday.
Boggs, who began the year as the stand-in closer for injured Jason Motte, walked both batters he faced in the seventh inning of a 6-5 victory at Milwaukee on Thursday night and has allowed 17 hits and 10 walks in 10 2/3 innings.
If you want to see Moneyball in action, all you have to do is go to Springfield, MO and watch Mike O'Neill play.
By most scouts' standards, O'Neill would not be a prospect. He stand only 5'9", has no power and little speed. But what he does have is the uncanny ability to get on base.
Through 25 games this year, O'Neill is hitting .338 with a .490 OBP...
Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright may be off to a hot start, with a 2.03 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in six starts so far this season. However, the man isn’t just a pitcher, he’s a human being with many eclectic interests.
Wainwright recently sat down with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch to talk about being a foodie, among other topics. The 31-year-old right-hander also spoke about subjects...
Cardinals' close Jason Motte, who has been on the disabled list since
March 29 with a ligament tear in his right elbow, will undergo Tommy
John surgery next week and miss the remainder of the 2013 season.
As reported by Andrew Simon, at MLB.com,
"Motte said on Tuesday that the elbow had responded well to his latest
throwing session, which included tosses from...
St. Louis Cardinals rookie first baseman Matt Adams is on course to return from the DL on Tuesday when he is eligible, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Adams (oblique) will join Double-A Springfield today to start a rehab assignment, then join the Cardinals in Chicago on Tuesday. Adams is looking forward to getting back into live games.
“Better get there quick, Big Boy.”
That quote has circled the blogosphere this week after St. Louis Cardinal General Manager John Mozeliak responded with those words after Josh Gilliam, of the great site Pitchers Hit Eighth, asked about seeing Carlos Martinez in Springfield. Less than a week later, Martinez is on his way to Milwaukee to join the major league squad as struggling...
While Adam Wainwright has had plenty of success against the Milwaukee Brewers, Yovani Gallardo hasn't been able to figure out why the St. Louis Cardinals give him so much trouble.
St. Louis seeks a fifth straight win Saturday while sending host Milwaukee to a fourth consecutive defeat.
Wainwright (4-2, 2.03 ERA) has gotten off to a solid start, striking out 43 while walking...
Mike Matheny has a Mitchell Boggs problem.
Not insomuch as Mitchell Boggs comes in and can't get outs, causing the Cardinals to make games closer than needed, if not lose games they shouldn't.
No, that's not the problem. It's A problem, for sure. It's just not THE problem. The BIG problem.
Zero baseball fans expect every pitch of every...

Although they've been one of the top hitting teams in the majors at home, the Milwaukee Brewers are being tested by the St. Louis Cardinals' red-hot starting pitchers.
