This post will not revisit the debate surrounding the decision to shut down Stephen Strasburg after 159+ innings. The right and wrong arguments do not matter at this point. What does matter is that the Nationals were one and done for post season series in the aftermath and fans of the team, writers and perhaps even the players themselves will forever ask, "What if."The Nationals were among the best stories of 2012. But the team's wonderful season became a footnote when the circus began about Strasburg. Instead of being celebrated for what the team had become, the team became embattled by its stoic stance to stick to the plan. And to show just how fickle baseball writing can be, the same writers who have long passed judgement on Dusty Baker for "killing" Prior and Wood were lambasting the Nationals for their decision making. The Nationals did not have to win a World Series title to put aside these questions. But a win in Game Five against the Cardinals would ha...

On the...

Werth's walk-off wins it for Nats

The Washington Nationals signed Jayson Werth to show them how to win. His game-ending homer Thursday night extended their surprising season. Werth led off the bottom of the ninth inning by driving Lance Lynn's 13th pitch into the left-field stands to give the Nationals a 2-1 victory over the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals and force a Game 5 in their NL division...

Nats lose painfully after winning more than usual

(Eds: With AP Photos.) By HOWARD FENDRICH AP Sports Writer For their first seven years, filled with on-field losses and off-field gaffes, the Washington Nationals merely existed, barely mattered. That's why so much that happened in 2012 felt new and significant to them. All the regular-season wins - a best-in-baseball 98 - and the NL East title, the postseason highs and lows...

Harper, Nationals lead Cards 6-0 after 3 in Game 5

A night after Jayson Werth capped a 13-pitch at-bat by hitting a winning home run in the ninth inning, the Nationals needed only...

Nationals 2, Cardinals 1

Lance Lynn needed only a few words to describe a 13-pitch at-bat. ''Three-two heater. He beat me.'' There were more questions for the St. Louis Cardinals reliever, of course, but the answers were more or less the same. He went mano-a-mano with Jayson Werth in the bottom of the ninth inning of a playoff game, losing the battle when the Washington leadoff hitter put...

Thoughts On A-Rod, Washington Nationals And Playoffs

This has been a compelling postseason and it is getting more intriguing with each day. At the start of the season I projected the Giants and Yankees to meet in the World Series, and that’s still in play. The Yankees’ showing makes them hard to figure out, but one thing is for certain, and that’s things will never be the same for Alex Rodriguez and how he’ll respond to being...
