Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson got another look at how competitive pitcher Stephen Strasburg is on Wednesday.

Strasburg had a cut on the top of his middle finger of his pitching hand, and the skipper decided to pull him after six innings in the game against the Toronto Blue Jays. The right-hander didn't like the manager's move.

Johnson understood -- and still pulled the young right-hander.

"He said, 'I just won't throw that pitch," Johnson said to the media after the game. "I said, 'You won't throw any more pitches.' He was fighting tooth and nail not to come out of that ballgame."

Strasburg clearly wasn't a happy camper, something that was easy to see when he got pulled. That's another example of how the right-hander's establishing himself as a bulldog on the mound.

The Nationals play things carefully when it comes to their young pitchers -- especially when it comes to Strasburg.

They're limiting his innings anyway this year -- his first full season back after surgery that kept him out most of last year. A cut on one of his pitching fingers could cause problems.

The bottom line is Johnson was playing it safe and looking down the road. Strasburg will understand that eventually. He just doesn't like to come out of the game.
