San Diego Padres
The Diamondbacks are playing some of their best baseball and the Giants are playing some of their worst as the teams meet for the second time in a week in a three-game series that begins Monday at Chase Field.
Sparked by extra-inning victories in the final two games of the previous series at AT&T Park, Arizona has won five of its last six games to pull into a tie for first place with Colorado in the NL West, although it is stupid to talk about that, D-backs manager Kirk Gibson believes. The Giants are on a five-game losing streak and have lost eight of their last 12 after being swept in San Diego for the first time since 2010 last weekend.
Pitching matchups: Monday -- RHP Ian Kennedy (1-2, 4.70 ERA) vs. RHP Matt Cain (0-2, 6.59). Tuesday -- RHP Trevor Cahill (1-3, 3.00) vs. LHP Madison Bumgarner (3-0, 1.87). Wednesday -- RHP Brandon McCarthy (0-3, 7.48) vs. RHP Tim Lincecum (2-1, 3.64)
Whos hot for the D-backs: Gerardo Parra has thrived with everyday use. He has a career-best 13-game hitting streak, is tied for first in the NL with 32 hits and is tied for second in the NL with nine doubles. ... Left-hander Matt Reynolds is one of two major league relievers who has pitched at least 11 innings and not given up a run. ... First baseman Paul Goldschmidt leads the team with five home runs and 18 RBIs.
Whos not not for the D-backs: After a strong start, Martin Prado has five hits in his last 39 at-bats and is hitting .209. He had his first off day Sunday. ... Right-hander Brandon McCarthy leads the NL in earned runs allowed (23) and hits allowed (45) this season, although his stuff has been better than that. ... Miguel Montero has three hits in his last 27 at-bats.
Whos hot for the Giants: Buster Posey is on a nine-game hitting streak that includes nine RBIs, six extra-base hits and all three of his home runs. He hit his third homer of the year in San Diego on Sunday. ... Pablo Sandoval tied a career high with four hits against the Padres on Sunday and has five multi-hit games in his last seven to raise his batting average to .316. ... Madison Bumgarner has given up seven earned runs in his five starts, all quality starts.
Whos not hot for the Giants: Matt Cain still has not regained his typical form. He gave up four runs, three earned, and a Goldschmidt homer in a no-decision in his last start Tuesday. ... Postseason hero Marco Scutaro has five hits in his last 37 at-bats and is hitting .215. His walk-off error enabled the Padres to win 8-7 in 12 innings Saturday.
Notes, quotes, odds and ends: The D-backs are are 6-0 in extra-inning games, including two at AT&T Park last week, and have won eight games in their last at-bat. They have played a major-league-high 18 games decided by two runs or less. ... Poseys homer at Petco Park on Sunday was one of five that have benefited from the new park configuration this season. The Padres moved the fences in 11 feet this year. ... Bumgarner is one of two Giants pitchers in the last 90 years to open a season with five starts of two earned runs or less and at least five strikeouts. Tim Lincecum did it in 2010. ... Expect Paul Goldschmidt to start Wednesday, when Lincecum makes his first appearance against the D-backs this season. Goldschmidt is hitting .571 with five homers and 10 RBIs in 14 career at-bats against Lincecum. He has seven homers against the Giants, the most against any opponent.

Waking up this morning felt a little different. The sun was out, the birds were chirping, and reminiscing about the San Francisco Giants snapping their five game skid. All seems right in Giantsland now.
The Belt Show
Brandon Belt hit a solo homer in the 2nd inning to put the Giants up 3-0, but that lead didn’t last long as the D-Backs put up 4 runs in the 4th inning. The Giants...

Let’s be glad it’s still early on in the season, because the San Francisco Giants are on a five game losing streak (longest current losing streak in MLB)! They just got swept out of Petco Park by the Padres, and now start a new series tonight in Arizona. The D-Backs are also sending Ian Kennedy to the mound, and he hasn’t lost to the...
Just to be clear, I’m picking more on the Warriors’ history rather than this Warriors team. They don’t need any help against Denver. Against the Spurs, though…well, they might.
As far as the Giants go, however, they need help no matter who they’re playing. They just got swept by San Diego. In San Diego, which is as close to a home away from home as the Giants get...
While the Giants turn to Madison Bumgarner as he tries to continue his strong start, they also hope star third baseman Pablo Sandoval has not aggravated an injury that nagged him during spring training.
With Sandoval's status uncertain, Bumgarner will try to help the visiting Giants build on their first victory in a week when he takes the mound Tuesday night against the Diamondbacks...
While the San Francisco Giants were able to manage a 6-4 win in Arizona against the Diamondbacks Monday night, it was reliever Jean Machi who earned his first win of 2013, instead of the Giant’s starter and resident staff ace Matt Cain.
Once again Cain wasn’t a factor in
The San Francisco Giants have placed left-hander Jose Mijares on bereavement leave and recalled right-hander Sandy Rosario from Triple-A Fresno.
Mijares flew to Venezuela on Monday after his grandmother died of a heart attack last weekend. He was raised by her after his parents were killed in a car crash.
Mijares has a 2.57 ERA in 10 games for the Giants this season. He can be...
It's pretty clear to this guy that the 2013 Giants are another crazy squad full of comebacks and torture. There's just something in the water over at the Cove that makes this team simultaneously maddening and magical.
We're still in April, so that's why no one should be freaking out. We've seen this team go through pretty bad stretches of baseball en route to...
Brandon Belt hit a two-run single in the eighth inning, helping the San Francisco Giants beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-4 Monday night to end a five-game losing streak.
Belt also had a solo homer in the second inning against Ian Kennedy. The first baseman broke a 4-all tie in the eighth after Brad Ziegler (1-1) gave up a leadoff double to Nick Noonan and walked two.
The San Francisco Giants had no idea the Dog Days of August would make an ugly guest appearance in late April.
A promising 13-7 record kicked off the 2013 season but that delicious ice cream cake quickly melted into a sticky 13-12 mess, courtesy of the Giants' current 5 game losing streak. Stamp the word "Titanic" on the outside of AT&T Park, sprinkle some ice...
Pitching, pitching, and more pitching. That was supposed to be the key to success for the San Francisco Giants this season. Since the post-Bonds renaissance began in 2009, an era that has already brought the city of San Francisco two world titles, the team’s calling card has been pitching and defense first. In the last four seasons, two of which saw the team win the World Series...
PHOENIX (AP) -- Brandon Belt hit a two-run single in the eighth inning, helping the San Francisco Giants beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-4 Monday night to end a five-game losing streak.

These are not your World Champion San Francisco Giants. The last few days have been much more reminiscent of the mid 1990’s Giants, replete with inconsistent pitching and shaky defense. It is frequently said that to win any given game a team needs two of the three staples of any game, pitching, hitting and defense. While the Giants’ offense managed seven runs and eleven hits...
Yonder Alonso scored the winning run when San Francisco second baseman Marco Scutaro couldn't come up with Nick Hundley's grounder, lifting the San Diego Padres to an 8-7 victory in 12 innings over the Giants on Saturday night.
Alonso reached base with his third double of the game, went to third on Jedd Gyorko's single and scored on Scutaro's miscue. The loss is...
While Matt Cain is looking to end his longest season-opening drought in five years, the San Francisco Giants are trying to avoid their longest losing streak in almost three.
That might be a difficult task against Ian Kennedy, who hasn't lost to the Giants in nine straight starts.
Cain and the defending World Series champs will try to snap a five-game losing streak on Monday...
