PLAYERS: Lance Berkman
TEAMS: Texas Rangers
Struggling designated hitter Lance Berkman is getting a second consecutive game out the Texas lineup. Berkman says he isn't upset about being left out of the lineup Monday night for the opener of a four-game series against AL West-leading Oakland. He says he'll take the extra day to regroup. Berkman is hitting only .192 over the past 21 games, dropping to a season-low .266. He has only three RBIs and one extra-base hit the past 18 games. Rangers manager Ron Washington says he just felt Berkman needed a couple of days off and would be back in the lineup Tuesday. Berkman played only 32 games with St. Louis last season because of two operations on his right knee. He says he's not having a lot of pain.

Rangers give Berkman another day off

ARLINGTON, Texas Lance Berkman and his achy knees feel fine physically. His bat is another story. Berkman was out of the Texas lineup for a second-consecutive day Monday as manager Ron Washington wanted to give his designated hitter a chance to get some rest. Berkman is using the time to work on his mechanics. "I felt pretty good in terms of not having a lot of pain, but...

Collision at the plate leaves Kinsler in stitches

ARLINGTON, Texas It will take more than three stitches to keep the Rangers' Ian Kinsler out of a game. Kinsler, who just returned from the disabled list over the weekend, suffered a cut on the left side of his face after a home plate collision in the third inning Tuesday. Kinsler was cut by the mask of Oakland catcher John Jason when he scored from second on a single to center...

Calming Cotts sets up winning finish for Rangers' bullpen

ARLINGTON, Texas It had been a while since the Rangers' bullpen had to protect a lead, but the Rangers' relief staff showed no signs of rust in Monday's 8-7 win over Oakland. The bullpen retired the first 16 batters faced and helped the Rangers' offense, which finally showed some life, reclaim the lead for good. "They settled it down and gave us a chance to...

Rangers put Baker on DL and send McGuiness down

ARLINGTON, Texas The Texas Rangers have made a pair of roster moves, putting Jeff Baker on the disabled list and optioned first baseman Chris McGuiness to Round Rock. To take the roster spots, the team has recalled left-handed pitcher Joseph Ortiz and catcher Robinson Chirinos. Baker is on the DL with a sprained right thumb. The move is retroactive to June 13. Baker hurt the thumb...

Ogando still being slowed by inflammation

ARLINGTON, Texas Some pitchers on the mend are making progress for the Texas Rangers but that's not the case for all of them. Texas right-hander Alexi Ogando, who is on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation, is still being slowed and has not been able to throw a bullpen yet. "I still have a little inflammation in my shoulder," Ogando said. "It&...

No easy solution to Rangers' lineup woes

ARLINGTON, Texas Making a change for change's sake almost never works, but what the Rangers have been doing for six games isn't working, either. The Rangers lost their sixth game in a row Sunday mainly because of a stagnant offense. The temptation is to shake things up, but manager Ron Washington would rather dig in and trust that things will turn around naturally. It...

Rangers INF Baker on DL with sprain from high five

The low point of that high five for Jeff Baker is a trip to the 15-day disabled list. The Texas Rangers placed the utilityman on the DL with a sprained right thumb on Tuesday, five days after an over-exuberant high five from an unidentified teammate. ''It's frustrating when something is out of your control and it's non-baseball related,'' Baker said. '...

Rangers' Kinsler gets stitches after collision

Texas Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler is back on the field with stitches on his face and blood on his jersey after a vicious collision at home plate. The start of the fourth inning of Tuesday night's game against Oakland was delayed for several minutes while Kinsler was getting treatment. When Kinsler slid feet-first into home in the bottom of the third, his helmet came...

Rangers' Joakim Soria looks to begin rehab assignment Thursday

The Texas Rangers need some help.  They were leading the American League West for much of the early part of the season, and it looked like they would run away with the division.  Now though, the Rangers are two games behind the first place Oakland A's.  Help may not be coming for the offense very soon, but the bullpen could get some relief soon.  Joakim Soria is on his way...

Rangers Minor League Roundup – 6/18

Although the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders dropped their first game of the second half on Tuesday, rehabbing first baseman Mitch Moreland went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's minor league action in the Texas Rangers system.

A’s Look to Expand AL West Lead Over Rangers

As amazing as the 2012 season was, the excitement that surrounded that final home stand when the A’s finally took over the division lead from the Rangers on the final game of the season, their 2013 path towards a postseason appearance is shaping out to be more of a statement season than the surprising Cinderella tale. My guess, most A’s fans will gladly trade the anxiety filled...

Jays sweep slumping Rangers

Chien-Ming Wang won for the first time in more than a year, Colby Rasmus homered for a third straight game, and the Toronto Blue Jays completed a four-game sweep by beating the Texas Rangers 7-2 on Sunday for their fifth straight victory. The Rangers lost their sixth in a row and fell to 1-6 on a season-high, 11-game homestand. Texas has dropped six straight for the first time since...

Straily Struggles, A’s Drop Opener to Rangers 8-7

The A’s opened a pivotal four-game series in Arlington against the Rangers on Monday with an 8-7 loss. Both starting pitchers were shaky on the night, as Dan Straily and Nick Tepesch were hit around and ultimately earned no decisions for their efforts. A.J. Pierzynski banged a two-run home run off the foul pole in the second against Straily, putting Texas up 2-0. The next inning...

Athletics-Rangers Preview

The Oakland Athletics have taken control of the AL West in part because of the Texas Rangers' struggles on their longest homestand of the season. The A's will try to add to those woes while padding their advantage in a four-game series that begins Monday night. Oakland trailed by one game in the division after Texas won the opener of an 11-game homestand last Monday. The...
