Jeff Suppan, who worked in the minor leagues throughout the 2010 season, scored his second win in as many starts with the Padres Tuesday night at Petco Park.

Suppan worked his way out of a first-inning jam and gave up one run on four hits over five innings. He walked two and struck out one.

The 37-year-old Suppan was promoted from Triple-A Tucson on May 2 to take the injured Cory Luebke's spot in the rotation. In 10 innings with the Padres, Suppan has allowed one run on eight hits.

"Jeff gave it everything he had," said Padres manager Bud Black. "He knows what he has to do to get through the opposition."

Suppan retired 16 of the last 18 hitters he faced after surviving a shaky 29-pitch first inning.

With one out, Jordan Pacheco doubled off the glove of Cameron Maybin in center. Suppan walked Gonzalez, but nearly got out of it when Troy Tulowitzki grounded to Headley. The third baseman tagged the bag to force Pacheco, but Tulowitzki barely beat Headley's throw across the infield to avoid the inning-ending double play. However, Todd Helton singled home Gonzalez to give the Rockies a quick 1-0 lead. Suppan walked Michael Cuddyer to load the bases, but retired former Padres catcher Ramon Hernandez on a fly to Will Venable in right.

"I had some command issues," said Suppan. "I just kept battling. After that first, I treated every at-bat like it was the game."
