The Bucs were swept out of Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon as their pitching finally failed them and the offense remained nonexistent (with the exception of one swing). The loss was the Bucs’ ninth in a row at Dodger Stadium, and they’ve now dropped four in a row overall and are a dismal 1-5 on the young season. Things were looking up in the top of the first, as Starling Marte led off with a hit for the second straight game. Andrew McCutchen blasted a homer to give the Bucs a quick 2-0 lead and end the short-lived Pirates Home Run Watch, thankfully. Hyun-jin Ryu was looking shaky early on, and MAYBE, fans thought, MAYBE the Bucs would finally get going. They didn’t. After the first, the Pirates got just two more hits – both singles. And the 2-0 lead, which would have held up on Saturday, was not nearly enough for Jeff Locke on Sunday. Locke managed to get through six innings, but he looked very overmatched against the good part of the Dodgers order. He threw strikes and got the weaker hitters out consistently, but Carl Crawford, Matt Kemp, and Adrian Gonzalez hit him very hard each time through the order. L.A. scored twice in the bottom of the first to quickly tie the game, then went ahead  for good in the third. Locke allowed a fourth run in the sixth inning. It was probably about what you’d expect from the fringe 5th starter against a good lineup, but still seemed unsettling compared to what the other Bucs starters have done so far this season. Chris Leroux allowed two runs and a bomb in his season debut to round out the scoring for Los Angeles, and the Bucs went down with a whimper. They’re now hitting .117 as a team. They’ve scored 8 runs in 6 games. This is more than just a bad week, it’s a horrifically bad week. But that’s all it is, a week. I hope. SERIES WRAPUP Looking at the matchups going in to this one, it was tough to pick out a game where the Bucs had an edge…but two of them ended up being right there for the taking if the Bucs could’ve mustered the slightest bit of offense. They’re now 1-5, tied for the worst record in the majors. At this point, they should feel fortunate to even have one win the way the offense has been. Like I said, it’s one week…it’s already a hole the Bucs need to dig out of with a bunch more challenging series on deck. At least Arizona is a place that tends to be hitter-friendly… Dodgers 6, Pirates 2 / Box / 2013 Record: 1-5 / Next: Monday, at D-Backs, 9:40 Source: FanGraphs
